  1. Greetings All
I want to upgrade my computer to a Opteron with a AMD chipset to use with my DVStorm2. I could not get any info that they would work together. But now I did and I wanted to post this info to all who are interested.

    Dear Mr.Steve

    Thank you for your mail.
    DVStorm 2 did a test in the environment of AMD8111 +8151 .
That acts normally as a result was confirmed.

    Hello Steve,

Thank you for contacting AMD's Technical Service Center. Actually, no
you should not have any issues. In fact, the Canopus folks really like
the Opteron solution very much. You might even want to contact them to
hear their experience with Opteron based solutions first hand.
However, I can tell you that you will likely be very happy with an
    Opteron based video editing box.

The Opteron uses a completely different chipset and chip to chip
interconnect so the limited bandwidth issues have long since been
resolved with the Opteron based solutions.

Hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please feel free to
    contact me.

    Respectfully,

I am quite interested in what would be a compatable mobo/cpu combination for the AMD Athlon 64 3000+, 512KB L2 Cache 64-bit Processor - Retail $240 at New Egg for processor/heatsink.

All the motherboards available seem to have Via chipsets. I have yet to see any confirmation they will be compatable with Video Editing Solutions.

I could probably get an Intel Solution for close to that price with out the risk of beta testing the hardware.

  3. Hi Leoslocks,
One company that I can recommend for a single Opteron/Anthlon64 FX motherboard is Tyan and another for a dual Opteron is Iwill.

  4. Oh, someone else posted on the Canopus website that they have a working DVStorm2 with a "Asus SK8N mobo" so I guess you have both options!
I myself wold stay with a AMD chipset, but it's your choice.

  5. OH yes one more thing, when a 64 bit op-sys comes out, the only thing you have to do is reload the opsys and your off and running.

SiS has a chipset for the 64 3000+ out now but it is an ECS solution.
755-A2 V1.0 I am not fond of ECS products. The other solutions are the Via chipset (KT800) and the nVidia chipset (NF3 150). Both have revisions due out in the first quarter of the year that address their shortcomings.

The FX processors are still $400 plus. The first computer I ever built was on an Asus K7V board, slot A athlon. I do not want to repeat the mistake of adopting imature, underdevelpoed hardware. I may have to wait til spring to make a decision. Perhaps I will learn a little more about how to use what I have.
