    Greetings from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

I'm shopping for a new home Mac (I've been doing all my VCD/SVCD/DVD doodling at work). I'll be using it primarily for digital photography manipulation. A G5 is out of my budget and I'm not happy with the LCD monitor quality on the iMacs and laptops, so I think I might purchase a G4 eMac with a superdrive.

If anyone out there owns an eMac and has been doing VCD or DVD authoring with it, I'd be curious to hear your comments in terms of speed.

    Regards,

    Paco Ojeda

dont have an emac, but from experince i can tell you it can be done at decent speeds on a 1gz g4.

differnce is you only have 1 drive, but then again lots of imac users only have 1 drive.

i dotn see any reason why taht machine wouldnt be good for what your looking to do.

Or consider finding a new or refurbished PowerMac G4, either single or dual processor, and an external monitor. The price is competitive with the eMac, and performance and expandability is much better.
I like systems, their application excepted. (George Sand, translated from French), "J'aime beaucoup les systèmes, le cas d'application excepté."

I think the problem is when you live outside of an area covered by any of the apple stores the shipping becomes an INCREDIBLE consideration.

I have a friend in Argentina who got an eMac just for that reason. Includes monitor keyboard and mouse in a lighter total weight than getting an even priced g4 (with no monitor that still needs to be bought and shipped)

thus the appeal of the eMac.

any how, there is no reason why that machine would have problems doing what he is wanting to do...

    we've got 700mhz G4 and 1ghz G4 emacs here,
and I've burned a couple of VCDs on each.
Burns a little slow for me ( emacs burn CDs
    at 24 x, I have a Samsung 48x CD-R in my G4 at home)
but authoring using VCD Builder 1.1, and Toast 6.0
works great in OS X 10.2.8.

    DVD's shouldn't be a problem either.

  6. I have an eMac 800 SD. It's a good machine w/ one specific problem.
Go to apple discussion boards to find about more:

    http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?13@173.OLLZanU5tq8.1@.2cd7f944

eMacs have a tendency to develop two display problems:

    1. Raster Shift (IVAD cable should be replaced)
    2. Screen Geometry Distortion (analog video assembly should be replaced)

Just before the warranty ran out my eMac developed the second
problem. Screen Geometry Distorted (Barrel Distortion).
They replaced Analog Video Assembly and tested and the part was defected and replaced w/ a new one and it's ok now.

    Good Luck!
