This thing refuses to acknowledge my DVD+RW media.

Sony online tech support gave the retarded "try another disc" crap answer. I asked for firmware upgrade info, and the question was dodged each time so far.

    RICOHJPN DVD+RW
    INFODISC DVD+RW

These have worked flawlessly in all other burners and recorders to date.

Such a nice looking machine, ashame it has to go back to the store.

That is, unless somebody else out there has info on this. I'm about fed up with the DVD recorder buying sport for quite a while. Everybody has these great recorders with on HUGE FREAKING flaw that renders them useless. This is Sony's.

I'm still planning to get that one and the LiteOn 5005. Order JVC tomorrow, have before week is over. The 5005 probably end of next week at latest.

I'm fairly certain I'll be keeping the new JVC machine. Now that I have the VRO 480x480 problem under control, I'm halfway running again on the JVC combo, LP mode on DVD-RW in DVD_Video mode.

This Sony reads brand new DVD+RW only. Once used, never again. It treats them like write-once media.

I'm still trying to hack that damned 5001 too (getting aggravated, can you tell?). I really want 3-hour mode, and I'll require MV off (causes jitter being on). The CVBR (read: piss poor VBR that's almost CBR) is not my favorite, but I'd hope future firmware fixes that. It'll suit my purposes, I'll put it that way. The 3.3 MB/s CVBR is just fine, an equivalent to my ATI AIW settings.

    I hate shopping.

  4. I had similar problems Lordsmurf. The unit was still in the warranty, when it stopped recording onto any type of media, except DVD-R. Any other media would produce the error message 'C:1300 disc is dirty'. I cleaned the disks, used compressed air, and used a drive cleaner. Nothing worked.

Optical reader was bad. Since sending it to Sony (approx. $120.00 out of warranty cost) it has performed flawlessy.

Sony tech support is terrible. The gentleman I spoke to was no help at all. One tech suggested that I use compress air, and not use a drive cleaner. A different tech advised me to use a drive cleaner and no compressed air.

This is an ongoing issue with these burners. I am not sure why Sony will not step up, and recall these burners.
