  1. Hello,
I was wondering what brand/type of dvd-/+R media was the best in terms of:

    Longest Lasting
    Compatibility
    Cheap but still long lasting

BeAll would be my first choice. It is cheap, and is hard to beat for longevity and DVD player compatibility. Admittedly I have not tried every cheap brand out there, but I have tried most of them. Meritline.com is a good source for BeAll. Their prices are competitive, and delivery times are really fast.
I am not a BeAll spokesperson nor do I claim that there are not other equally good or better media brands out there. There probably are. Read the Media FAQ's on this forum:

  4. Definitely STAY AWAY FROM BEALL media. Maybe I got bad batchs but I am now finding that a few hundred of my BEALL DVD-Rs now are giving me lots of problems on all 5 of my players. My A06 burner also has problems reading the end of the discs. Each disc was burned "successful" and played ok at first. Now I am throwing most of them out, what a waste of time and money.

As far as a cheap and quality mixture, RITEK would be recommended by almost everyone.

I do not question SergeantD,s bad experience with BeAll. I have no reason to believe his experience is anything but accurate. My experience with Ritek has been that I had pixilation with Ritek disks when they were full burns. Maybe I had a bad batch of Riteks, maybe he had a bad batch of BeAlls.
Read the Media FAQ posted here, and try a number of different brands for yourself. The only thing for sure is that if you ask 10 different people which is the best media you will get 10 different answers.
    Good Luck!

  7. so for longevity, such as 20+ yrs, what would it be?

  8. The problem with longevity is that no one really has a freaking clue. You find someone who has had a DVD-r for 20+ years and I'll believe that they'll last that long. Yes, they can estimate, but you can't put much confidence in their estimates because in the end, only time will really tell us how long they'll last.

You might just want to pick up a sampler such as the ones that can be found and rima.com and meritline.com. This is a relatively cheap way to try out about 6 or 8 different brands of media and see which one works best for you.
