DRU500AX CAN'T BURN AT 4X WHY???

I burned about 30 bulkpaq 2x -r with no coasters. I wanted to try bulkpag 4x -r.
Having read some forum pages I upgraded the dru to 2f succesfully.
Nero (5.5.10.20 as far as I can remember) recognises the 4x -r media, tells me that it is transfering 5.500 something kbps but it still takes 30 min. like it did on 2x's to burn a full dvd-r
Last night I tried a different 4x -r media (same or similair to Princo) still 30 min.!!!

Dru is connected to mainboard as secondary master.
DMA is "enabled if possible".
Everything is connected with 80 pin cables.

Saving 15 min. on a 30 min. operation is not a big issue on my 24 hour day but if there is an easy way of solving this problem why not?

My now dead Sony DRU500a would burn any 4x DVD-R or DVD+R media at 4x until I messed with the firmware. After that it would only burn at 4x for the first 15% of the burn then drop back to 2x. I don't know what to tell you except perhaps to try some name brand 4x media like TDK.

The first Sony drive finally died after about 300 burns so I bought the DRU500ax which works well at 4x and I'm not going to update any firmware on this one.

I also have a 500ax with 2.0f firmware. Burns TDK 4x media at 4x all the way, all the time. Therefore, maybe Bob W is correct.

I've the same problem ... 4x media (Sony,Verbatim,TDK) writes at 2x ... my firmware is 2.0f.
Please HELP ME TOO!!!

I have eventually found a disc that WILL write at 4x speed in my DRU 500 AX.
It the grey top Datawrite Classic 4x discs.
A full DVD Movie in 15 mins...perfik.
Firmware level 2.0g

I also have a Sony with firmware version 2.0E and it burns Ritek 4x at 4x the whole way through.
