The size of an mpeg file (which is what DVD movies are) depends on the bitrate used to encode (average bitrate if using Varibale bitrate encoding) and the playing time. So you can fit longer movies by lowering the bitrate, but quality will suffer. There is no relationship whatsover between the size of avi source material and the final size of the mpeg when converted.
