NEC ND 1300a, or one of the rebadged versions of it. WHY? inexpensive, hackable firmware, works great -
Get the Pioneer. Save yourself the headaches. It will burn to any DVDR or CDR.

I have owned 3 Pioneer DVD burners (104 and 2 105s) and they are incredibly reliable. whenever my friends are looking to upgrade their drives I advise them to use Pioneer.

If you're interested in the Sony DRU510A, I've noticed in the last few days they have large quantities of refurbished units on Ubid.com in auctions. At this moments they have 60 of them and they're closing the auction in 40 minutes. My conclusion is that perhaps they break a lot, or they get a lot of returns.
The NEC ND1300A is also a good one, a little cheaper than then Pioneer 106. But you may have problems burning to cheap media, unless you flash the firmware.
Pioneer 106 or A06, maybe the most reliable.
Plaxtor 708 is also a very good one, can burn at 8X speed on 4X media, but it is a lot more expensive. -
Funny because I just ordered my first dvd burner just like 10 minutes ago. I ordered Pioneer dvr106 because i heard alot of good things about it. It suppose to be very reliable.

I havent got a DVD Writer yet but when I asked the opinion of forum members about a reliable DVD writers, I got response from 20 members who recommended Pioneer DVR A06. I am going for the OEM model of Pioneer DVR A06 soon.
Thanks to all the members so helped me to make up my mind.vsenapati -
I read on many message boards and forums that the Sony do break a lot. I would recommend Pioneer as well. Newegg has great prices

You are right newegg.com is selling the Black model Pioneer 106BK for US$128 which I think is a great price. Do you think the price will go down further during christmas ?
