I'd like to purchase a PCI TV TUNER CARD so I can convert my vhs tapes to dvd media. Also would like to record from my tv to my computer. What is a good brand to purchase? I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

I like my AverTV Stereo by AverMedia. There is also the AverTV Studio which is the same as the Stereo model but adds FM stereo reception.

The only problem is ... chances are ... you may have to deal with audio sync issues. I've found one method that works fairly well but not all the time 100% and another way that does seems to work 100% of the time but will often give you a final FPS that isn't dead on for the format (meaning a NTSC capture won't be exactly 29.970fps but might be ever-so-slightly lower or higher).

The second method produces good results but I know somwhere somehow TMPGEnc is either adding frames or deleting frames here or there to make the final output exactly 29.970fps and that bothers me although the stuff I've done that way does look good. I like the other way better but then you have to deal with the occassional audio sync problem which usually can't be solved otherthan redoing the capture (and if you capture from live TV that can be a problem).

As a result I am thinking of getting the Canopus ADVC-100 or the DataVideo DAC-100 since they can capture at rock solid FPS values without audio sync problems.

The ATI All In Wonder VE cards are nice, as are the older 7000 and 7200 PCI cards. I have a 7200 PCI card.

IMHO, the typical Hauppauge PCI cards (win tv go, primio fm, etc) are among the best and they are the so called standard for applications like virtualdub. I'm not talking here for the latest winpvr models, but the old ones, based on bt878/etc chips.

Real cheap products with real decent quality are those taiwanisse ones from Kworld, like the "mpeg 2 station" card. About 45 Euros with remote control and windvr for realtime capturing to mpeg 2, really desent IMHO.

ATI and Asus are good choices if you wish VGA solutions (also Matrox, if you have the money to get them). Older ATI IMHO ain't good for the PAL users, NTSC users with wintel PCs seems to like them. New ATI cards are better for PAL users than before, excellent for NTSC users from what I read. Asus cards never had great support, but they have great community and unofficially local support in parts of Europe and Asia.

Basicly, do a search to the capture cards in your left of the screen. You'll be suprise to see how many products exist today for this task! Also, great reports from users there to read about issues, problems, support, etc
