  1. I am a newbie, so SORRY FOR THIS QUESTION.

I want to edit my own home movies. I can tell the sections of movie I want right down to the particular frame. I want to break the video apart at these particular frame sections. What program would be the easiest for a NEWBIE to use. Ideally, I am looking for a editing program that allows me to simple type in the time, down to the actual frame number, instead of using a scroll bar.

I am also trying to do the same type of editing with a show I recorded, in an attempt to edit out the commercials.

Any help that could be given to this NEWBIE would be greatly appreciated.

  2. You didn't say what your final format was but assuming you plan to encode these video projects to MPEG and author to VCD/SVCD/CVD or DVD, it's best to do all of your editing prior to to encoding.

There is no best software out there. Several can do what you ask. There are freeware tools like Virtual Dub (NanDub, VirtualDub Mod, etc it comes in several variations), or commerical tools like Vegas Video or Adobe Premiere.

If you do a google search you might be able to find copies of MovieXone which use to be freeware, then went commerical. D/loading the freeware verison is still legal/fine and pound for pound that'st the most powerful tool you can get without spending any money.

Pinnacle Studio 8 is known to be the easiest editing program out there. Really easy and you can edit by frames each segment, and then join them together very very easy.

But this program is known to run very smooth on some systems, and lock up and crash on others. This may be a result of having many other video software programs on the same system. If you have a fairly clean system and new & powerful system, and your computer is set up for video, this may be a great program for you. If you have tons of programs already, and an outdated processer, short on memory, etc. I would stay away form Studio 8.
