Can anyone give me any advice on when too split a DVD-9, I know a lot of it comes down too how much compression can I live with. I ask this because it seems you can not always judge just on the length of the movie, some shorter titles are larger size than longer titles etc. I don't want too compress a title too much so that it is highly noticeable.

  2. I think it is completely discretionary on your part.

Personally, my main criteria is the type of movie. If it is a drama or a comedy, then it doesnt really matter THAT much on compression. Its all talking anyway, so you wont really notice the difference. I just copied A Beautiful Mind on compression 8 I think and it looks perfect.

On an action or sci-fi movie with lots of special effects and the like, then compression matters a bit more. On an action movie, I wont compress less than say 6. If I have to compress more than 5, I use two disks.

Also, budget is a concern. Obviously using two disks on every movie gets twice as expensive. If you cant afford it, compress it to make it fit. If you dont mind spending the extra money, use two.

So again, it is completely up to personal tastes really.

    Erm .. hope this helped!!!

Programs like DVD2One do such a good job that I put pretty much every movie I backup on one disc.

Use any of the fast transcoders that you want . I use DVD2One , Clone DVD , and DVDShrink . If it is a single title movie any of these programs will work fine . The only time I split a disc is if it is an episode disc ( i.e. Star Trek The Next Generation ) . Any of these programs produce acceptable quality . I used DVD2One with LOTR The Two Towers and the quality is very good ( slight macroblocks in very dark scenes ) . If you are doing adult discs then use Instant Copy . The encoding they use on those is not as good as hollywood studios . Instant Copy produces excellent results with adult discs . Good luck .
Keep it on the big cam !
