If you had a time machine where and when would you go back/forward to and why?
I'm still pondering my response so I'll post mine later.

if i had to go back in time, i would go to the middle ages. i just love all the fighting and battles that went on during that time.
if i could go forward in time, i would just go 10, maybe 15 years into the future, just to see whats going on in the world -
do we get to go and come back, or just go and stay there?

I'd go back to November 1st 1987, the last day I saw my Grandad before he lost his battle to cancer three days later (on his wife's, my grandma's birthday incredibly), and tell him what he meant to me.
Being a niave 16 year old at the time and for some reason not being told by my parents what was wrong with him I didn't know he was saying his goodbye's.
The cancer was so bad he couldn't speak properly.
That would be my only reason for a time machine.

When I was a kid I always wanted to go back in time to see some dinosaurs. Now I've got kids of my own I'd like to go to the future and make sure there ok.

I already have time machines....my VCRs & DVD Players
Flim and video are as closest to the real thing as you can get for preserving moments in time.
I'd love to get a look at the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, since we only know what one of them actually looked like.
Would like to know if the Colossus of Rhodes looked like this http://www.unmuseum.org/colrhode.htm
or this
or if Zeus really looked like Laurence Olivier
We only can imagine
Ancient Egypt, Rome or Greece are just some of the places that would be interesting to see...but I don't think I'd want to stay there :P
Visiting for a day or two would be cool though.
I wouldn't mind going back to the '70s or even early '80s.
Would like to go back knowing what I know now or to be an adult during that time period - as much as I liked being a kid during that time, I could've appreciated it and experienced a lot more as an adult.
I'll only want to go into the future if I can stay young 8)
Not looking forward to aging
Thought for sure someone would've said they would travel back a few short years just before this site was created so that they'd be the ones to do it

I would go back 27 hours and smack the bitch up side the head who hit me while walking across a crosswalk

I'd go back a week last Tuesday, I did the laundry and watched tv. Boy what a night!
-
I'd probably go in search of the very first pub.
It'd be good to go back to April 1953 and be there to see James Watson and Francis Crick making the first ever picture, and discovering the true structure, of DNA. It's something that has had such a massive impact on biology, which is what I study, so it'd be interesting to see that start of it all.
Or the moon landing. In my opinion, that's Mankind's greatest achievement. I hope I'll be alive to see the first person set foot on Mars. You guys who remember the moon landings - you lucky!

Now that was ablast of nostalgia.

I'd go back a week, enter the winning lottery numbers for the $30 million dollar lottery draw that was on the 27th, win that, go back another two weeks, do the same with the other $30 million lottery draw then go back and invest in technology stocks during the internet boom and pull the money back out before the stocks burst.
Come back forward to the middle of 2003, fix some personal details then come back to the present time. -
You do know once you see the future, what you've seen is no longer certain to happen.

so what future did you see? you've changed the outcome, so the "future" you saw wasn't your "future", only a possible future.
take a look in the movie Minority Report, the exchange between Cruise and Farrell about the wooden ball falling to the floor.- housepig

it'll be interesting to see if the movie The Butterfly Effect has any new spin on this idea... aside from the fact that it forms the basic premise of the movie - you go back and change one thing, it leads to another, time travel isn't as "clean" as we'd like it to be...

"First of all, Papa Smurf didn't create Smurfette - Gargamel did. She was sent in as Gargamel evil spy with the intention of destroying the smurf village, but the overwhelming goodness of the smurf way of life transformed her."
"...and as for the whole gangbang scenario - it just couldn't happen! Smurfs are asexual. They don't even have reproductive organs under those little white pants."
- No offense lordsmurf. ...and sorry to everyone else, i know this was an earlier topic - i just couldn't help myself! -
If you had a time machine...
