I am considering purchasing one of the $300 something set-top DVD Recorders from Sam's Club.
What I would like to know is this. Is it possible to make backup copies of my DVD movies, ones that I own - not rentals? I know the device has component and S-video inputs. Is it possible to use the component or S-video output of my set-top DVD player to the same input type on the recorder?
Or is the video signal even thru these ports altered in such a way that these DVD Recorders cannot record them? I know that VCR's are unable
to record them, but, I thought that these devices may process the incoming signal differently.
Thanks!

No, you won't be able to back-up your movies to any of the standalones. They will detect the copy protection and prevent it. You would have to use a defeater box of some type to get around that.

Or simply buy PC DVD Writer and you can make backup of any DVD.
Pinnacle Studio 8 and DV home video editing (ver.9 already home)
