  1. Has anyone out there had or have problems ripping DVD's w/ the NEC 1300a?
Given the responses from my other posts

it seems that I have to buy a DVD Rom to rip my DVD's. I'd really hate to do that. I prefer to have as little in my puter case as possible.
    Thx
Oh, I'll shut up (abt this particular problem) after this but someone out there must know why I'm having these problems. It's killing me! Problems have reasons and resolutions. I just have to know.
    Thx again

i am familiar with your siuation i too have the 1300a which is a great burner, but not the best reader (ie ripper). i have been unable to rip certain vobs within a disc. these discs are somewhat scratched (kids ). i tried rubbing the effected areas with toothpaste and actually got one of them to read with the 1300a.
my workaround has been to rip these "difficult" vobs with my Lite-On rom on my other system, and transfer them over to the folder on the system with the 1300a and go from there. my reader has zero problem reading ANY dvd. you may not need a Lite-On per say, just a rom (but the foremention is a great drive). good luck.

I bought a used DVDRom that rips from 2.9x-7x for $5. My NEC 1300a dutifully rips at 2x, as does my 6 month old 16x DVDROM(manufacturer said tough shit, ripping is illegal).

Get a liteon or get used to long rips.....

  4. to all,
my rips with the 1300a starts at 1.9x at the beginning of the disc and ends up as high as 4.9x toward the end. just that it has issues READING some discs that are somewhat scratched .

  6. I found it strange.

My neighbor's Nec1300 (1.08fw) could rip a scratched DVD easily where a Pioneer ROM failed.
Started at 3.5x up to 6.5x without a single read error

  7. Firmware 1.08 disabled the 2X ripping speed limit (if I remember right). Check Herrie's web site.

  9. Which is good news!
All of his firmwares remove the 2x speed limit when ripping DVDs.

ps. I haven't upgraded my firmware since I stick to name brand media. I use my other DVD drive for ripping. I made the mistake of using the NEC once or twice and it took simply forever.

  12. The NEC 1300A even with firmware 1.08 rips terribly slow. It rips about 75% slower then my Lite-On 166s. I recently purchased the NEC brand new for a great price...so I can use it in conjunction with my Sony and give my Sony a rest. But I'm not too please with the construction..it's complete crap compared to the Sony burners. Very light weight plastic pieces throughout..where as Sony uses Solid medal pieces. If the laser of the NEC is as crappy as the construction..I won't be using it for long. Right now..it appears to be burning fine...but i'm weary because of its crappy construction.

It's not the NEC persey..it's the fact that it is a DVD WRITER. A DVD's writers laser is much more refined then a DVD ROM's. I've had many occasions where my LITE-ON would NOT rip a certain point of a DVD...but when I put that same DVD in my Sony....it rips flawlessly. Most of the time I don't even have to put any scratch repair solution on the disk...I just have to put the disk in my DVD WRITER...rip the one VOB or file which my ROM has a problem with..and voila!

  13. I understand that the Nec1300 is a cheapo one

I was just referring to noki's and Gazorgan's posts.

So that Nec I was talking about does a good job on scratched DVDs and its top ripping speed is 7.0x now.

  14. @ tompika...I got a deal on the NEC 1300A ..$40 brand spankin' new...so I'm using that off and on along with my DRU-510A. As far as the ripping speeds go...my NEC gets around there as well with fw 1.08....but my Lite-On 166s gets in excess of 15.4x for DVD-5's and around 12x for dual layer...even burned media goes to 10x. So I always use that for ripping.

I hear what you're saying...I was just making a point that any DVD WRITERS laser is going to read media in general better then a DVD ROM..just because of the laser alone. Numerous times my Sony has ripped data off disks..even at less then 1x...whereas smartripper and DVD DECRYPTER wouldn't rip jack off the disk with my DVD ROM..even running the Disk through a disk scratch repair kit. Most people think switching between rippers is the solutions..and in some cases it is..but in most it isn't. When a disk is damaged..it's either gonna be read or it isn't....that's where the Writers can really come in handy with a rip task.
