  1. i am looking at getting either of these. i want 8x, but the tdk only has a 2mb buffer. the sony is a 4x, with a huge 8mb buffer. im running a 1.7ghz celeron (i know, i know. . .) with 1gig of ram. is there really a need for this big of buffer? any other drives that are good let me know. i want an internal dvd+-rw. 8x is what im looking for, but i know there are only a few out there. btw i work at a major retail store and get a nice discount, so price doesnt matter. thanks!

FYI, the only 8X burner with a 8MB buffer is the BenQ model which is only+R/RW, but there is rumor just coming out that BenQ will provide a dual format capable firmware for download (with a fee) early next year.

Otherwise a 2MB buffer has become the standard for all 8X burners, even Sony's next 8X burner has only 2MB. IMHO, a 2MB buffer is more than enough for your computer, just make sure that your HD is fast enough and not defragmented to slow down the burning. Even with a slowdown, the buffer underrun prevention feature on each burner will ensure a proper burn and that's the main reason why manufacturers have switched to 2MB buffer to control cost.

  3. so go with a 8x? would you recommend the tdk? i am only saying that because at the store i work at we have the tdk and the plextor 8x, which are actually the same drive (i think. . .) and i prefer the black bezel of the tdk, because it matches my case. anyone else have any ideas. . . ?
