    Hello Gurus:

I really love this site for the information it provides. Here is my first post and a unique issue I think, coz I didn't find any post about a similar issue all over the site.

I have a HP machine with Windows XP Home and recently installed a Lite On 402S DVD writer.

I ripped a new movie using Smart Ripper 241 and was trying to backup the movie using DVDShrink 3 Beta 5. Everything went fine till then but the output it created (video_ts directory) is about 4.47 GB which does not fit on Fuji DVD+R disc or for that matter any other disc.

I tried the same using DVD2One123 with no luck. It still creates a size of more than 4.35 GB. I also tried the whole process by starting with DVDdecrypter and using DVD2One123 / DVDShrink and still get about the same size.

So guys, where do you think I might be doing wrong? Please suggest as I'm stuck here and couldn't burn a single DVD. Any pointers are truly appreciated.

    Thanks - Heman

I have never had this problem personally. Are you sure you've selected 'DVD-5' in the properties for DVDShrink?

If you have try putting in a custom value like 4450, then make sure you select 'Automatic'.

Thanks for the quick reply roach76 - You are amazing.

I have selected 'DVD-5' in the preferences and didn't alter any other settings.

Excepting altering the compression ratios and de-selecting AC3 2channel Directors comments, I didn't change anything.

Is there any limitation that if we select 'custom', we need to choose 'Automatic'? I didn't try this option, I'll. Shouldn't the default selection of DVD-5 work? This behavior (size > 4.35 GB) is noticed if I use DVD decrypter and DVD2One too.

  4. heman_mou,
I have had this happen a couple of times. The problem is that these programs only do a quick analisys of the disk before it starts to compress. In DVDShrink if you use deep analisys it will compress it to a more acccurate size. However if you aren't using that much compression it is much quicker to use the custom size and drop the target size by 100 mb.
    Hope this helps.

  5. DVD2one 1.2.3 has a problem keeping the size at variable bitrate
    Fixed in 1.3.0.

Some movies give DVD Shrink hard time regarding the size.

  6. Hi all.

heman_mou, are you sure you're not getting the right sizes?

    Blank DVD-R 4,489MB 4,706,074,624 bytes or 4.383GB
    Blank DVD+R 4,483MB 4,700,372,992 bytes or 4.377GB

Is it your burning software telling you the files won't fit on a DVD-R?

Yeah, how do you KNOW it won't fit on your media?

I've never... and I mean NEVER had any of these programs produce an output file that was too big.

Yeah, if you are choosing 'Automatic' then your best bet is to try 'Deep Analysis' as apurcell suggested. Just go and have a nap why it does this, but then come back and be prepared for a better quality backup than your previous attempts.

Thanks guys! you guys are wonderful.

apurcell, roach76: I used deep analysis with DVDShrink and still the problem exists. Yeah! custom size may be a solution but I'm curious to know why the stadard process doesn't work.

ddlooping, Gurm: yes, I'm not getting the right sizes. I first checked the directory size (using windows explorer) that was created after backing up with DVDShrink/DVD2One. Nero tells that the files won't fit on my blank DVD+RW disk.

Since the same issue is happening with two softwares, does any one think OS (windows XP home) may be the culprit? Any takers?

heman_mou: It's you. Not sure why but never had the problem.

A +RW is smaller than a -R. Try a +R disk but jsut do a test burn. Again it could be Nero, did you alter the default settings? As I recall DVDShrink shoots for a +R disk.

That +RW is blank, right? It doesn't have some files on it? It's not formatted by InCD is it, background formatting on you? None of those will work.

Gazorgan: My +RW is blank. It's not formatted by InCD.

When I check the size using the windows explorer the size itself is 4.47 GB which will not fit in a +RW/+R. Burning in +R will not solve the problem right?

I wish you would fill out your profile.
When I check the size using the windows explorer
is never a safe sentence. The size explorer says doesn't actually mean it won't fit on a DVDR. Depending on disk size (hence block allocation size) and operating system, as well as FAT32/NTFS you get different numbers.

    Try this:
    1) Make a folder called MOVIE on your C drive ( C:\MOVIE)
    2) In that folder make to new folders, VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS , both must be all caps.
    3) Drag you IFO/BUB/VOB files into the VIDEO_TS folder.
    4) Downlaod and Launch IMG Tools classic. Point IMG Tools to C:\MOVIE . Point the Destination to C:\ and name it mymovie.
    5) Run it. When it's done you should have a file called mymovie.iso on C:\ .
    6) Open Nero, put in a DVDR and do a Recorder/Burn image. Point it to C:\mymovie.iso . Click on the burn button, but only do a test burn. If it's too big it will tell you immediately.

You could have messed up your Nero preferences. If you dont' have a disk in there, it can get confused sometimes (default to CD).

  15. Never had a problem with that. Maybe your discs can't handle that although I seriously doubt it. Even after I burn my discs /compressed with DVDShrink I can still have a visible tiny unrecoreded trace at the edge. The recording software is telling me I still have 12 to 24MB free on the disc.

    Enjoy!

I think it's a Nero problem. I had a burned disc (made with InstantCopy) that I tried to later copy with Nero and got the same message, not enough room. I then used IC 8's copy disc function with no problems.
