Friends series

I have recorded the friends season and now want to put it on to a dvd for my sister. I have been able to get it onto my hard drive as an .avi file. I was wondering what the best way to transfer these episodes onto a dvd using the least amount of dvds possible. So I guess the first question I should ask is what do I change the avi file to and what program should I use to do so? The second question is how do I copy it to dvd so she can watch it on a dvd player without making a lot of dvds?
