This unit is starting to shit me, sold two to customers thinking that they had some good specs compared to everything else but have learned they really are finicky in what media they will accept
    Brands tried

Shintaro 4x rebadged princo's - ok but iffy

Smart Disc 4x burn perfectly at 4 times but don't think you will be able to read them in a dvd-rom or stand alone player require very good laser to pick surface

Laser 4x (AN32) could only manage 1x burn max setting playback sort of ok
burns at 4x in sony dru-510A playback perfect

  2. I have used Comp USA -R format and they work fine on this burner, I just ripped a SONY - R and it works great. I also did the latest Firmware update.
