  1. I have a raw DV video I edited in Adobe Premiere then converted to MPEG-2 to bring into Encore, no problem there. Then I set Encore up with menus, etc..., no problem. I burned the DVD and it works great in all set-top machines, but in about 1/2 the PCs I tried it in it said I needed a codec for the DVD drive. Is this because I used MPEG-2, or is it that way with all DVD drives until you "buy" the correct codec? I tried WinMediaPlayer, Real, Quicktime, and they all either wanted a new codec or to download something from their site which turned out never to fix it.

Yes you need to install DVD playing software. All of the programs you have mentioned will not play a DVD.

PowerDVD, Sonic or whatever needs to be installed. Windows Media player 8 and above on XP will play DVDs - but only after POWERDVD or another DVD player software is installed.

It is nothing to do with Premiere or Encore.

  3. Thanks for the confirmation.....that is what I thought after doing considerable reading on the subject. I was just hoping that I had missed a "setting" somewhere in Encore to enable PC playing. Well, my target player is set-top anyway so I guess I'm good to go.

    Thanks!
