Looking at the Gigabyte GO-W040A for $239 Aussie Dollars verus the Pioneer 106 at $235. The gigabyte burns cdr at 40x so I'm tempted - any one actually have any experience with this unit, only found 1 review for it on the net...tkx.

FYI, the Gigabyte GO-W040A is an OEM model of the BTC DRW1004im, another model using the Mediatek chipsets, and there is plenty discussion of the BTC model at CDFreaks:

You can also find more posts discussing the BTC model in the DVD Writers section. In short, don't be fooled by the faster CD writing speed, do you buy a DVD burner to burn CD or DVD? The Pioneer 106D has the best DVD writing quality, while the BTC is definitely ranked at the bottom. -
I have owned a Sony DRU500A, a Nec ND1000A (flashed to ND1100A), an Optorite DD0203, and a Liteon LDW-400D. I just today obtained a Pioneer 106D, and the early indications are that this will be by far the best of the lot. I would definitely encourage you to buy the Pioneer.
