I was listening to The Shins the other day and thought about how people have probably heard of them in the UK, but over here almost nobody has every heard of them. Same goes for Space, Aphex Twin, and similar bands. Even KMFDM was only taken my a small group here.

Is American music popular in the UK? Are your top 10 lists mixed with UK bands and American bands?

I'm just curious because all that seems to be played in the US are US bands.

Well, Tgpo, I know you did not ask about Italy, per se, but it is pretty big over here as well. My wife likes MTV, and the Italian version of it here plays a lot of it as well.

Italy is fine. So American music is big there, but Italian music so no where over here. Is America really that closed off??

Not exactly. Most people do not seem to realize that America is in its Golden Age. It is the part of a country's history that its very culture is emulated around the world. Egypt, Greece, The Roman Empire, The British Empire, etc, all had such ages. There are certain aspects of Italy that do make it there such as Italian Opera, fashion (Milan is the world capital of fashion now, it is no longer Paris), etc.
    Hello.

  5. It depends where and what you listen to in Australia. Although we have a very good local music scene we still get a large amount of American music. I would estimate probably 50-60% American music is played on a channel like MTV.

I wish we had more British music oer here. It's just so good!

And I guess Silverchair did make it over here from Down Under. And IceHouse had the song Great Southern Land on the Young Eienstien(SP?) soundtrack. It wasn't popular and no one has heard of it, but I like it

  7. We have a lot of good punk/alternate rock bands here. Silverchair is one of the bigger ones but in terms of music I think their are better.

We also have alot of female pop stars such as Delta Goodrem (wouldn't be suprised if she breaks the US market, nice girl as well), Holly Valance and Kylie Minouge.

The problem with the US is that for international acts its so hard to get recognition in unless they are massive in other countries.

We breed them well down here.

That's the kinda stuff MTV used to show all the time in the early to mid '80s.

Icehouse were very popular back then in the US...Hey Little Girl and No Promises had the most airplay.

And yea, Great Southern Land used to get played a lot on a couple local radio stations in Pittsburgh.
I bought that album when it was first released.

They used to sell a lot of 12" remixes in the '80s also.

I can remember the days you could go into a record store and pick up an album for a buck or two.

Most of the teen movies from the '80s had a bunch of the New Wave music on their soundtracks.

If you have digital cable or a dish...you can pretty much find anything on their Music Choice channels. The New Wave channel will play most stuff from the '80s, if it's available on CD.

Unfortunately, a lot of stuff never got reissued when CD's came along...so there are a lot of lost treasures.
That was the appeal of P2P...you could find most stuff on there at first,
but now it's not as easy to get.

I loved most of the Aussie bands from the '80s - Also very into Simple Minds (from Scotland) and a whole bunch of Reggae 8)

I remember Icehouse as a pretty good band. One that I like out of Canada has always been 'Tragically Hip'.

I personally think that MTV and the cartels that own American radio stations force certain "marketable" music down peoples throats.

I apologize if I am getting the Hypertext screwed up.

Kinda like how Radio Stations ignored Fountains of Wayne until their third album. Not they play Stay's Mom 24/7. Or how the song 'Send the Pain Below' is played every 5 seconds. Radio & MTV sucks.

  19. Thanks for fixin'

Fountains of Wayne is one of the few albums I have liked in, say a year. Just good music. Prior to that I would have to look to Kenny Chesny's CD.

Both of those albums I got before they took off and I am happy that I did. I got to listen to good music before MTV/CMTV killed me with overplay.

As I have said in these forums before, and to make clear: Radio Sucks. An airway desert. Stagnant and void of new clear sounds that make a generation.

Come on. the seventy's style of clothing, tatoos and music (see re-makes)is the only new thing this generation of 20's can do. Get off your asses and make music that defines 'your' generation.

I will sit in my recliner and wait..And at this rate I will see the new material girl.

Fountains of Wayne's debut album was great! Their followup, Utopia Parkway, was also a great album. I've yet to check out their new one.

I was saying that about radio as far back as the late '70s

Always fun back then to call the radio station and ask if they could play a certain song - and what I got from them was usually...

after several attempts and getting busy signals:
    No
    We don't play that
Dude, I just played that a short while ago - tuff...you missed it

    or
    an enthusiastic oooh...OK
but after a few hours go by...you realize they aren't going play your song

I used to work in radio when I was in college - that sucked too.
mid '80s - not allowed to touch anything New Wave (when the stuff was brand new) - they had every album you could think of but all that stuff was still sealed and stuffed tightly across the bottom record shelf.

The albums you were allowed to play had tags taped to the cover saying what tracks you were allowed to play - and that meant play those tracks only.

Then I had the pleasure of being the victim of answering the phone all day and taking requests from people, and the DJ wouldn't play any of 'em
A few would keep calling and demand that their song get played or some dude getting pissed about his Ozzy song not being played and would call back every 5 minutes and yell until you played the damn song

I knew I didn't want any part in that and got into television production and creative writing instead.

  22. The thing that gets me is when I play, say Little Feat, and youngins think that is good music. Really? I say they have been makin' song for 30 plus years. Or some have found Billy Joel and I have to go...didn't your parents play music in the house? These were focal points in musical time.

I am not here to say whether the afore mentioned were good or bad, but rather that what the hell was played in peoples homes that makes 70's music so appealing to 20 plus. And for that matter, with it, the rise of the use of Horse.

I am stymied when a generation looks outside itself for its music and culture.

  23. Rookie64, do you remember when there was more than one channel that played the same thing? I think I remember when radio DJ's would experiment. Too many stations and artist use formula's. Granted, each may be seperate, but still serve the same purpose.

Now that I think about it again...'The Wall' pretty much had it right.

Yea, a handful of stations would try something different.
A couple in my area tried to be diverse in the '80s, but it didn't last long

If you notice...a lot of today's acts are pretty much covering older tunes.

If you caught the American Music Awards earlier, there were a couple performed there.

Same with today's commercials - they're usually old pop tunes used for their jingles.
