I'd like to encourage the development of MPEG1/2 proofreader/correctors to try to achieve a greater compliency in the final MPEG stream.

For example TMPGenc does not produce MPEG complient enough for my portable VCD player to play (& VCDeasy complains every time). I can cite examples of non-compliency in virtually every mpeg encoder (H/w & s/w) that I have ever experimented with.

At the moment activity in this area is fragmented. Pobably the most important and active contributor is Wiljo Heinnen with 'Offeryn', which corrects A/V sync errors. But only for a few flavours of MPEG.
There are GOP fixers & MPEG header correctors but documentation is scarce and they have quite limited functionality.

I'm sure if all these talented and commited folk were to pool resources, there could be a program that took garbage in and wrote fully complient, a/v sync-ed mpeg 1 or 2.

Could you include this in the 'How to' sections and also in the forums.

  2. Maybe this could be moved to the Programming section?

It sounds like a great idea, although I for one don't think I'll be able to help much.

It does seem ridiculous that so many encoders do not produce standards compliant MPEG streams; BBmpeg is apparently the exception, which is one reason why DVD2SVCD uses it to multiplex streams - AFAIK.

    cheers,
