  1. I have a Sky+ satellite system which records onto a hard drive. I wish to archive some of these files onto my PC, but wish to transfer the information from the Sky+ to my PC wirelessly using a Philips VL1400 wireless TV link so that (i) I can watch live/recorded programmes on my PC, (ii) record onto my PC hard drive for editing, and (iii) archive onto DVD. The Philips VL1400 has a SCART output - I assume that I can use a converter to convert from SCART to audio phono/S-VHS connector.

Can anybody please help me by recommending a suitable capture card (for pulling in the signal from theVL1400) and software for recording, editing and writing to DVD. Many thanks.

    I have a P4 2.4Ghz PC with 512Mb RAM, 2 X 120Gb HDD's and an Audigy Soundblaster sound card with firewire port.

  2. Try a converter like some of these scart to s-video or composite converters. http://www.shop21.uk.com/en-gb/dept_49.html

You should then read the capture guides to the left. You will need to decide whether you want to capture to an AVI format like DV, huffyuv, mjpeg then convert to DVD compliant mpeg2 or capture directly to DVD compliant mpeg2 format either using compression by software, hardware, or a combination of the two. You can also visit http://www.lordsmurf.com for more information. You will then need to use programs to author you DVD and/or burn it with your DVD burner assuming that you have one.

Once you have figured out what capture, convert, author and burn scheme that you want to use. You then will choose a card that captures to that format, an mpeg conversion program if necessary, DVD authoring software, and DVD burning software. For example you may capture to DV format with the Canopus ADVC-100 through your computer's firewire port, convert to mpeg2 using tmpgenc, author with tmpgenc DVD author, and burn with Nero 6. You could also capture directly to mpeg2 with a WinTV PVR-350 then author and burn with Sonic MyDVD. There are countless possibilities. Direct to mpeg2 saves time but sacrifices quality and makes editting more difficult while AVI retains more quality and is easier to edit but creates large file sizes that need to be slowly converted to mpeg2.

Could this piece of your idea "technically" be illegal???
(ii) record onto my PC hard drive for editing, and (iii) archive onto DVD.
Since most tv shows have copyrights....
If not illegal in any way, I will be more than happy to stand corrected...

  4. It is for personal use only and so is similar to recording onto a video tape. The only bits I am editing out are the advertisments. Hence I should not be infringing copyright.

Glancing at a few of your pasts post, a couple are asking for help on burning downloaded DVD images and several discuss downloaded SVCD's. Are these all legal?

  6. Bugster,

This is my first posting - I only joined the forum at the weekend! Hence, I do not understand what "previous posts" you are referring to.

All I wish to do is copy programmes onto DVD for archiving purposes - in effect the same that I would normally do with my video recorder. The only difference is that (i) I am doing it to DVD, and (ii) I wish to edit out the advertisments. It is for personal use.

So I do not see the issues - otherwise anybody who uses a video recorder to copy TV programmes is infringing copyright - and I believe that it is generally accepted that one is not infringing copyright in circumstances such as this if it is for personal and not for commercial use.

I joined this site to get help, not to get into a debate about copyright!

A Missunderstanding I fear, sorry about that. I quoted all of makntraks post, which happened to include a quote of your own post. My remarks were aimed at makntraks, not yourself and I apologise for the confusion. Capturing and archiving of TV shows is one of the many activities that members of these forums pursue and discussion of this is not considered a problem as long as it for personal use as you state.

It was makntraks comments regarding the suspect legallity of your actions that I take issue with when his own posts suggest question marks over the legallity of his own activities. This is simply hipocrisy (sp?).

Again, sorry for the confusion, no offence meant.
