I am new to burning DVD's and need a little help.

Can I be pointed to a page that will help me make sense to the files that are used on a DVD? I want to only burn the movie and the program will let me but there are a bunch of files andI don't have a clue as to which to select. I don't need anything but the movie, as a rule.

    Thanks

    Greetings,

To copy DVDs, I use a combo of three free softwares:
    DVD shrink
    IMGTools
    DVD Decrypter

Go on any of these tools and read the different guides. You will figure out pretty fast how to use them.

In brief, here is what I do:

    - I begin to read and modify the dvd with DVD shrink. If the dvd is encoded CSS, I use DVD Decrypter to rip the dvd on the HD.
    - When the dvd is shrunk, I use IMGTool to create an ISO image. Usually, it is a 4GB file.
    - Then I use DVD Decrypter again to write the ISO image on the matrice (DVD-R(W) or DVD+R(W)).

    Thank you

  5. DVDs come in two 'formats'. DVD5 (single layer) and DVD9 (dual layer). DVDR media are all (currently) single layer. Here's what you do:

    DVD5 backup
    -----------------------------------
    1. Run DVD Decrypter, choose "mode | iso - read" and rip an ISO iamge file of the DVD to you HD
    2. Choose "mode | iso - write" select the image file and burn to a blank DVDR disc

    DVD9 backup
    -----------------------------------
    1. Run DVD decrypter. Choose "mode | file" select ALL the files and rip to your HD.
    2. Run DVD shirnk. Choose open from file, select the 'VIDEO_TS.IFO' file from the folder with your ripped DVD files.
    3. Backup or re-author DVD (see shrink guides)
    4. Run IMGTools and convert the VIDEO_TS folder that shirnk made into an ISO image file
    5. Run DVD Decrypter, choose "mode | iso - write" select the image file and burn to disc.

This is a 100% freeware solution to DVD backups. Aside - you can rip the DVD in DVD Shrink but DVD Decrypter is faster and works with more discs. Ripping from shirnk doesn't save any time. I personally like to rip to ISO image files, then mount the files w/ DAEMON Tools to make a virtual DVD-ROM drive as needed. That way I can rip several different discs to my HD but only have 1 file (vs. several folders/files) for each disc.

    Greetings,

Vejita-sama explained exactly the steps I am doing in his post. There are different guides with variations if you need more details.

  7. i just want to put my 2 cents in here. if you are copying a dvd to
dvd-r/dvd+r i quess you do the steps explained, just in case you want steps to copy to a regular cd-r i use two programs only:

DVD2SVCD and VCDEASY (and chapterxtracter if you want chapters)

dvd2svcd gives you an end product of a mpeg which you burn onto a
    cd-r with vcdeasy.

    just my 2-cents.
