  1. Yes, I am a newbie at this, but I am learning.

What I am seeking is a suggestion for a guide that will take me through the process of inserting a DVD into the drive, to the point that I have a file (.AVI) that I can edit in Premiere v6.0.

Last night I used DVD Shrink to copy one .VOB file from a DVD to my PC. I then used DVD2AVI to create a project and started the VFP frameserve from TMPGEnc. This created a .M1V file. This is where I get lost.

The guides that I have scanned through don't seem to explain beginning to end what I am trying to accomplish. Can anyone help me by providing suggestions on which guide I should be looking at or perhaps a list of tools to use and the sequence of steps that I should be following?

    Thanks

  2. What you want to do is convert to an avi file, not frameserve it to Tmpgenc as that will produce another mpeg file, not good for editing. Take a look here

  3. Bugster,

Thank you very much for the response.

I have looked at the articles at https://www.videohelp.com/convert#13. Are you suggesting that I use Virtualdub-MPEG2, as suggested in the following article?
    https://www.videohelp.com/avi2divx.htm

If so, my sequence would be:
Copy VOB from DVD to PC using DVD Shrink
Convert VOB to AVI using Virtualdub-MPEG2
    Edit AVI using Premiere v6

Is this correct? Or is there another sequence that you would recommend?

    Thanks

  4. You should use DVDDecrypter to copy the vob files from the DVD disc to your HD (or does DVDshrink do the de-encryption?)

Otherwise, try that guide you mentioned, I havn't used it myself, but if it works, great.

  5. Bugster,

I tried this sequence last night:
Copy VOB from DVD to PC using DVD Shrink
Convert VOB to AVI using Virtualdub-MPEG2
    Edit AVI using Premiere v6

DVD Shrink does decrypt the VOB allowing it to be copied to the hard drive. Virtualdub-MPEG2 does convert the VOB to AVI.
The problem that I have had at this point is when I try to edit the AVI in Premiere, Premier crashes.
I am able to import the AVI to Premiere. I able to add the clip to the timeline. But when I try to preview the clip, I just get a green screen in the preview screen. And after a few more mouse clicks, Premiere crashes.

I have been able to watch the AVI using MS Media Player without any problem.

I have tried several codecs when doing the Virtualdub-MPEG2 VOB to AVI conversion. I know that I have tried DivX4 and Cinepak and I get the same crash in Premiere.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

  6. Try the Panasonic DV codec from the tools section. It will produce quite large files (13Gb for 1 hour) but it should be compatible with Premiere as that is what it was mainly designed to handle.

You can't edit the VDUB frameserve in Premiere, you can't import the clip correctly(at least I never could very well)

What exactly are you trying to do?

You can do this(which I've done when really bored, or to put Pulp Fiction in it's correct order :P ).

    1) Rip with DVDDecryptor(video and desired soundtrack, stream processing)
    2) Use VDUBMOD and convert it to Huffyuv
    3) Edit in Premiere
    4) Output as desired

I wouldn't try this with less than 40 GB of free space minimum.

  8. Gazorgan,

In response to your question of 'What exactly are you trying to do?', I am trying to edit video clips from DVD's in Premiere v6.

Instead of using DVDDecryptor, I have been using DVD Shrink without shrinking the output. It does copy the VOB off of the DVD to my hard drive without any problems.

I did download the Huffyuv codec and then converted the VOB to AVI using Virtualdub-MPEG2 with the Huffyuv codec.

Then I imported the AVI into a project in Premiere, added the clip to to the timeline. This all worked and I even have a image in the preview window. After a view clicks, Premiere crashes.

    Bugster,

I did not have time to try the Panasonic DV codec but I really don't have a lot of hope of it working either. I have tried several different codes up to this point and they have all acted the same way which leads me to believe that it is not related to which codec I use.

    My current process is this:
Copy VOB from DVD to PC using DVD Shrink
Convert VOB to AVI using Virtualdub-MPEG2

Is there some other way to create an AVI for editing in Premiere v6 that anyone can suggest? Is there any specific reason to use other utilities other than DVD Shrink or Virtualdub-MPEG2?

    I am open to suggestions.

    Thanks
