  1. Is there some software like TMPEG for Mac?

I have used ffmpeg and mediapipe and they don't compare. Is there something else?

Also I'm very impressed with virtualDub for PC. Is there anything like that for Macs as well?

The closest thing I've found is Cleaner 6.0. It is great but costs a lot of money. I can buy a PC and use TMPEG and virtualDub for the same money.

I hope that someone can help me. I have been a Mac user for 17 years and don't like seeing the PC appear as the machine of choice.

If you have been using mac for 17 years I have a hard time seeing how you can say PC appears to be the machine of choice just becasue of 2 applications!

Your post is too vague... what do you want to do exactly.
Most of the mac apps are specific for a particular job.

you can use freeware or $$ware to achive the project, its all up to you, but what is it you are wanting to do?!

  4. I understand the problems with PCs, hence being a Mac user for 17 years. But the point was that I could (if I had to) buy a cheap PC and install tmpeg and virtualDub to do what I have to do.

Now what I have to do exactly is:

Encode video as AVI using vp31 codec for video and IMA for audio. This creates a file that can be played on mac (quicktime) and pc (windows media player). VirtualDub is the only program I've found that will do this.

Also I need to encode videos as MPEG1 for VCD and computer playback. The only program that does this really well is TMPEG.

The PC appears as the machine of choice for the above applications only. I can't stand using PCs, which is my reason for this post.

I've looked at apple and it says that it will output to mpeg 2, mpeg 4 and other quicktime formats.

Does anyone know if it can output an avi with the vp31 codec and if it can output mpeg 1 files?[/quote]

    No. Only Mpeg4 and Mpeg2.

And the mpeg2 only at full resolution: any way to encode an SVCD or CVD... sigh! ... It could have been perfect...
