  1. Hi all!

Based on rave reviews from this site, I just purchased and installed a Pioneer DVR-106 DVD writer today. Question is, what is good DVD media for this drive based on your experience, expensive/cheep? I am interested in RW media right now because I am new to this drive and want to erase as times test me.

Please respond with your feelings/experiences on various media which has worked well with this drive. I live in the Midwest USA.

I just got my 106 as well. I have a limited choice of media where I live, so I just bought what was the cheapest at the time. It was HP 2.4x +R media. I've made 5 successfull back-ups that play on all stand alone players that I've tried. I have a 3 year old RCA 5 disc changer that does not play CDRs but does play DVDs made using this media.

  3. got mine 106D last week as well. I have tried all formats (-+R/RW) and it works well with this drive. IMO, best media depends on where you want to play the disk. I settle on DVD-R as the format of choice since it plays on my old DVD-ROM drive and also my (very picky) Toshiba 3109 DVD player.

I've found that TDK 2x DVD-R (TDKG02, Made in Taiwan) and Ritek G03 are exceptionally good in this drive. Ritek G04 is also very good. Most quality media I've tried works well but I find that those give the lowest error rates in Kprobe (assuming you put any weight in Kprobe tests). TYG01 media (Taiyo Yuden 4x DVD-R) seems to give very high error rates in this drive. None of the good quality media I've used in it have shown any problems in actual playback though. For +R media, RICOHJPNR01 works well but my Sony DRU500AX seems to do an even better job with it.

Oh, I should mention that I recently tried a +RW disc in this drive (Fuji 2.4x) and my DVD player wouldn't recognize it. That's the only problem I've seen so far.

  5. Metaluna has skirted around the issue I always raise here - just because the blank was compatible with the burner (ie you could burn at full speed, which is what I assume you mean), doesn't mean it will play back flawlessly on a target device.

Try a small quantity before you commit yourself to a larger order in case it doesn't work out.

  7. Apart from a Dud batch of 20 Laser discs (4x Princo media)
The Princo 1x's have worked 100% in my 106, these are branded as Shintaro.
I just want to know how long the life span of DVD-R's are!
I mean can we expect them to play, i.e hold data for 12 months or 12 years?
