Hi,
I have asked this question before, but still getting same prob..
When i convert a divx/xvid to DVD, then playback on DVD player i get slight jerkyness, but not always.
Video Info;
640x272
23.976fps
Divx 5.0.5
I convert using tmpgenc, i select NTSC (16:9), 23.976 (internally 29.79), 3:2 pulldown, Full Screen (keep aspect ratio)
I am in the land of PAL if that makes any difference. But NTSC (s)vcd's play ok.
Hope someone can help, as this is happening with all my DVD conversions. If you need anymore info please say.
Thx in advance.

I think you misunderstood me. In my case, it was when using DVD-lab that i had the jerkyness problem.
One thing you could try which seems to help. When encoding with Tmpgenc, encode to 23.97fps (not 29.97fps internal, just 23.97fps). Encode video only. Then add the 3:2 pulldown flags with pulldown.exe. Then author, adding your audio at this stage. Doing this seems to improve things for me. -
Great stuff bugster i will give it a go, soz about the misunderstanding..
Which options would u recommend be necessary in pulldown?

Thx Bugster, i'm just encoding video only now, so will give pulldown a go tomorrow. So will pulldown just add the borders, ect...i'm not quite sure wot pulldown actually does?
Thanks very much for all your help, i hope this sorts out the jerkyness. -
As I said, encode the video at 23.97fps. Pulldown then adds the flags to make it playback at 29.97fps.
-
Hi Bugster,
Ok, video only encoded, i enter the mpg into pulldown, hit GO, and got this error msg;
"ERROR 3068: FUNCTION SYNTAX.ILLEGAL DELIMITER FOUND"
Wot do u think the problem is here please?
look forwards to your reply.
thx -

I've had this problem and actually have found converting to PAL a much better way to do this, as follows:
1. Open AVI in Virtual Dub
2. In File menu, select 'File Information' note down audio info (like compression method, etc.)
3. In audio menu, select 'No Audio'
4. In Video menu, select 'Direct Stream Copy'
5. In Video menu, select 'Frame Rate', then select 'Change Frame Rate To' and enter 25
6. In File menu, select 'Save AVI' (save as new name!)
7. In Audio menu, select 'Direct Stream Copy'
8. In File menu, select 'Save WAV' (on the pop up select 'All Files' as opposed to *.wav, save audio with correct extension - usually .mp3, see 2)
9. Use BeSweet to convert MP3 to another format (MP3, MP2, AC3) and select the change frame rate from 23.976 -> 25.000 functionality
10. Convert new video & audio files to DVD using DVD 16:9 template (if widescreen) in TMPGEnc+ (video arrange method = Full Screen Keep Aspect Ratio), use 2 pass VBR for best quality
11. Do not convert the audio in TMPGEnc+ if you made an AC3 in 9
11a. Go to bed for 12 hours
12. Use TMPGEnc DVD Author to author (also allows 'muxing' with AC3, i.e. select DVD video file from 10 and AC3 audio file from 9)
13. Have a coffee / beer / smoke - you deserve it
14. Test output in Power DVD or similar
15. Burn disk in TMPGEnc+ DVD Author
16. Put in standalone and enjoy
I use this method and it works everytime as long as the AVI is ok to start with,
Look on this site there are many guides for 23.976 -> 25.000 fps conversion, BeSweet (+GUI), etc. thats how I learn't.
Thankfully there are some bloody clever people ot there (thanks guys)!
To do all this you will need 10.5 -> 11.5Gb of spare HD as follows:
* ~710mb for AVI
* ~600mb for audioless 25 fps AVI
* ~110mb for 23.976fps MP3 audio (or 1gb for 23.976fps WAV)
* ~100mb for 25.000fps converted MP3/MP2/AC3
* ~4.5gb for new MPEG2 DVD stream
* ~4.5gb for new authored DVD from TMPGEnc DVD Author
Good luck - any questions then repost,
Jukka
PS if the audio is something like WMV then you may need to extract to PCM, in that case replace 7 & 8 with:
7. In Audio menu, select 'Full Processing'
7a. In Audio Menu, select 'Compression' and select 'PCM' as the compression method
8. In File menu, select 'Save WAV' and enter a new filename -
Jukka, thx for the great guide, i hope i can get it to work!
I will go to bed for 12 hours 1st to get the energy to do this, then re-start tomorrow!
Thx

Ok, i am just going through ur process, and i'm at the besweet part, its converting audio to 25fps, and during processing it has come up with a message saying 'Downmix overflow (1: 0 to 0.1db)" Also getting a "CRC Error & Stream Error Sync found after 38 bytes"......transcoding continuing though.
Is this normal? should i continue encoding?
I have also started encdoing the video and used all the settings you suggested. For the past hour its has been analyzing film and hasnt encoded yet? -
Ok,
never tried AC3 -> AC3. If you're not too worried about format you could try AC3 -> MP2 (you should get a Dolby Surround downmix rather than the 5.1 from AC3), however you may still get that error.
Also did you try finishing the whole thing and seeing how it played (PC and standalone)? Were there any synch issues? Try looking at https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=160433 it mentions AC3 fps conversions.
Depending on the outcomes of above you may have to play around a bit,
good luck,
Jukka -
Hi Jukka, thx for the reply.
OK, everythings done. When i play back on PowerDVD weirdly enough the audio is well in sync, except for the quality! Its very hissy and sounds like theres interference/static, although it might be ok once burned.
Also, the picture still looks jerky. I also tried playing back on zoom player, and looks same, but not that obvious!
I'm not sure whether to burn the film or not, i usually use Nero to burn, never used tmpgenc author for buring.
thx -
Ok,
now I'm confused. Your PC is well up to spec so should have no problem palying, but you do say that PowerDVD gives more jerkiness than Zoom Player and the audio is all buggered.
Many things could be happening here:
1) Something is up with your MPEG2 codec for playback, you could re-install PowerDVD and see if that helps.
2) Something has screwed up the audio, was that the AC3 -> AC3 conversion, or did you convert to something else? Try converting the AC3 to MP2 (and doing the 23.976 -> 25.000 conv. at the same time) then playback the audio in WMP and see how it sounds, if its funny aswell then the source could be shafted or the BeSweet is wrong. People do say you should use the latest beta versions of BeSweet & GUI.
3) If you can spare a disc, burn it and see how it turns out. That way you can at least see if the picture problems have gone.
I must admit to being a bit at a loss otherwise,
Jukka -
Hi Jukka,
The picture and sound quality was both the same in PowerDVD & Zoom Player.
But i have just played the AC3 audio alone which i converted to 25fps and the audio is poor quality just as the authored DVD, so there must have been a problem encoding it in Besweet. But the audio isnt that much of a problem here, i am mainly concerned about the picture, it does still look jerky on the monitor even after converting to 25 fps. I selected all necessary settings as you mentioned.
I also ran a frame check on original xvid using VD, that came out ok.
Must be a setting in tmpgenc somewhere to sort this out.
Cheers
TheDJ® -
Hmm,
1. Is the original XVid ok? (You can use VDub to check for bad frames -oh you did that!)
2. Get the latest BeSweet beta version or try AC3 to MP2 conversion (loads on beSweet on this forum)
3. Throw the question open to the masses again
4. Is the original AC3 ok?
5. Re-install PowerDVD
I have to admit that I am somewhat embarrassed now, all the conversions I have done this way are perfect.

Hi Jukka,
Been reading up on this problem.
I was reading this thread >>> https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/78178.php
It mentions that during video conversion with tmpgenc, to check "do not frame rate conversion."
I didnt check this, maybe this is why i am getting jerky playback?
Wot do u think? -
Not read that, I still cant understand why this isn't working. Just a thought, when you converted with TMPGEnc did you pick the PAL DVD 16:9? This is the one you should pick (I didn't state this explicitly in my guide above) since the 25fps conversion for the audio has been done by VirtualDub.
Other things to check on the audio, I'm assuming the original audio is ok. Convert to MP2 (or WAV) using besweet and do the 23.967->25.000 fps conversion at the sametime. Then play that audio in WMP and see how it sounds, if that is screwed then there is definitely something funny with besweet.
If these two fail I am at a total loss as to what is wrong, sorry (I've done 2 more conversions since we started this thread without any problems following the above)

Hi Jukka, thx for the reply.
I finally sorted the audio out, just converted to wav then to mp2.
I am authoring the film now and will let u know how it comes out, but playing back just the video on the PC looks a little jerky.
cheers

Same thing Jukka, after all that hard work!
I am well gutted, just cant make a smooth playing DVD
Whether its PAL or NTSC, doesnt matter, same results.
Thanks for your hard work anywayz Jukka, appreciate it.
If anyone has any other idea's, i would be very grateful!

If it's a 1 CD AVI, don't bother.
What size and length is the source file? Gendre?
Also, is it truly 29.97 avi or 23.97 avi?
Generally speaking AVI's from DVD are 23.97 , there is absolutely no reason to make them 29.97 . This is the real source of your problems. Stop messing with the pulldown and encode the video at the original 23.97 (including 23.97 internally). Also, try putting black bars on the top and bottom of 44 each to get it into proper 16:9 aspect ratio. If you can get it working as a 23.97, then converting to 25 fps is just another step before encoding. I'm trying to eliminate problems prior to conversion. I go from PAL top NTSC without problems, and have gone the other way a time or two (boy does that sound bad :P ).
All of this is ignoring the 23.97 to 25.00 conversion you need for PAL land. That's a seperate , well documented guide. I think your problems arise from your basic encoding assumptions.To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
@Gazorgan,
thanks for your input but TheDJ should be able to do this, I have done it loads of times, even with 1 disc AVIs - regardless of the source (ahem!) and have got good results.
What I can't understand is that whether he converts from 23.976 AVI -> NTSC DVD (inc pulldown, etc.) or 23.976 AVI -> 25.000 AVI -> DVD he still gets jerky playback.
I'm wondering whether this could be a codec problem?
@TheDJ
Try this:
1. Go to TMPGEnc > Option > Environmental Setting > VFAPI plugin and increase the priority of the 'DirectShow' reader (right click)
2. Re-install TMPGEnc and the DivX codec
Also to make things easier avoide converting the whole lot, let TMPGEnc run until it has done 10 mins of the film then try it out (saves time!).
As I have said before I have done this loads of times without any problems.
Jukka -
Thx for the reply peeps.
@Gazorgan,
The Movie is a 2 CD avi, 1.5gig, just over 2 hours, and virtualdub says its 23.976fps.
In tmpgenc, did u mean to select 23.976 (29.97 internally), coz i dont see a 23.976 (23.976 internally). Also wot do u mean by, "try putting black bars on top and bottom of 44? I usually select 16:9, but not sure wot u mean by 44?
@Jukka,
Directshow reader is already set to top priority in table, because i was getting unsupported format before with other files.
I'll reinstall codecs, see if that makes a difference.
Thx
TheDJ® -
Does the jerkiness only happen on the PC (from the Harddrive?) or on the standalone?
