  1. I can get the Pioneer DVR-106 and Sony DRU 510A dvd-writer for about the same price. Which one should I take. I'm thinking more towards the pioneer. The only reason I consider the Sony is because it can burn DVD+RW at 4X, unlike the pioneer 2.4X. Is this true?

Any other reason I should consider one above the other?

  2. I suggest that you take a look at http://www20.tomshardware.com/storage/20031027/index.html which is a survey of 11 of the current burners with some very stringent tests. Of the Sony and the Pioneer the Pioneer cane out best. Anyway have a look fot yourself.

Yes, the DRU-510A is still one of the few dual format burners which can burn 4X DVD+RW. If this is important to you and you use mainly the +R/RW format, then go with the Sony. On the other hand, the Pioneer 106D has much better compatibility with the -R discs and burn quality than the Sony model.
