  1. A friend of mine has an 80 gig maxtor external HDD that hooks up to USB2.0 that he'll give me for $40. but I'm wondering how well it will work to capture to in comparison to a second HDD on the EIDE channel. I'd be using the Canopus ADV-100 through a firewire card. My main drive is 120G but I've heard its best to capture to a second drive specifically for capture. Just not sure how well an external USB drive would work for this. I know its nice and cheap but if it doesn't serve my purpose its of little use.

If you are using a ADVC-100 for input, it should work OK. DV video transfer is not near as demanding for a harddrive as capturing with a video card. Compared to an IDE drive it will be quite a bit slower, but you can always use it for file storage. If you have the room in your computer case, you could also install the drive itself internally.

  3. I honestly don't know the answer to whether it is good enough for capture or not, but may I say...that is a tremendous deal, getting an external, 2.0, 80-GB hard drive for only $40. I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Matter of fact, let me know if you don't want it...

Go for it! That's exactly what I use and it works brilliantly. :c)
    There's no place like 127.0.0.1
