  1. I'm looking for this really cool machine: but I wonder if it exists.

This machine would sit on top of my TV, like a TIVO. Like the TIVO, it would record TV onto it's hard drive.

Now here comes the great part: When it recorded, it would record directly into beautiful DVD-ready mpeg2 files.

It would have a Firewire port on the back, so I could plug in my Mac and burn those files to DVD using my burner. When plugged into my Mac, the hard disk would act like any other Firewire hard disk, so that I wouldn't have to spend the time copying files from one hard disk to another to play with them.

    Does this thing exist?

    Has anybody seen one?

Where do I get one and how much does it cost?

    Many thanks,
    Clement

Any of the new combo units will do this for you!
What I'm calling a combo unit is a SET TOP DVD RECORDER with built in HARRDRIVE
Some are harder than others to get the stuff off the hard drive and into your computer without burning the elemental MPEG file to a blank..
That is you either want one that the harddrive can be removable
or can be modded to have an ethernet port that talks to your PC

People are doing these type of setups now..but like you say there's nothing on the market specifically for this..

others have moded their TIVO and can breakout these files to save..but I haven't seen anyone but Wintel Users able to transcode the TIVO stuff to MPEG-2 usable on DVD.

It seems easier to use a PANNY or PioNEER setop because it uses MPEG-2 that can be authored with directly..some of the settops even come with software to extract these files from the DVD media burned in the settop
    www.softarch.com
also sells MAC software to get at these .VRO (not.VOB) elements

    The worst of it -
These machines now all have the firewire port and it's IN ONLY..
All they would need to do is make this in and out..
    OH WELL
can some who's actually done this please shut me up!

  3. Well, it doesn't do mpeg2, it does mpeg4, but who cares? Check out one of Galacticas "Coming Soon" dvd/divx players (the AVX-500). It has a USB 2.0 out port if you did want to convert your files to mpeg2 but according to his website it plays and burns mpeg4 just fine all by itself. Unfortunately, since it's not shipping yet, there's no pricing information available.

    Cool looking machines though!

You should be able to access them as any network drive from a mac or pc, as far as I know..

If only I had the money

No problem, just wanted to straighten this out. I know ZeroSix and Co. have been working very hard on their site and are entitled to all the credit!

I wish i had helped out, cause then I assume I'd be entitled to either a free or severly discounted player.

    Isn't that right ZeroSix?

  7. Thanks for the advice guys (are there any girl posters here?). I have a few questions:

    1) I thought about buying a DVD recorder with a hard drive, but I already own a DVD burner and it seems silly to purchase the same thing twice, especially as there'll be the new format coming out soon, and I'd rather have one of those rather than two 4.7 gig burners. Ideally, I'd like something that just did the capturing and storing so that I could later take the files and package and burn them on my Mac.

    2) I'm looking at a ReplayTV thingy. I think it can be hooked up and accessed via a network through it's ethernet port. Does anybody know if this is true?

    3) I don't know as much as I should about mpeg-2 files as I should. Would a ReplayTV unit (or any other) create an mpeg-2 file that I could write to a standard DVD and play in my standalone DVD player WITHOUT re-encoding it first? That's really the key thing.

If anybody can shed some light on this, many thanks.

    -Clement
