makes me wonder how many "regulars" are around at any one time - people who check in or post on a regular basis, rather than new users who come in, find what they need, and split.

if you had 1,000 regulars who would pay $10 for a year's membership to the forums, that's $10,000 to offset the cost of the site...

Roll up in a ball and cry. Not that I could not afford it, but this site is all I want: Nice people helping nice people for nothing. Attach a dollar value to it, and something is lost in the spirit of it. I am a member of Doom9, but I spend most of my time here. It just seems more natural here.

Those that want to donate will, those that never will will leave if they're forced to.
Different people have different circumstances but it doesn't help to be reminded that you're getting all this for free.
What I would prefer would be a weekly popup (just one day a week and only once that day, as you log in to the forum for instance) with a polite link to the donation page.
You either click it or delete it.
In fact, once a month might be enough.
