  1. Apologies in advance for newbie question; Sony digital8 home movies on tape are of excellent quality. Ultimately trying to burn on to cd for security, longer lasting etc.Via pc and ulead basic4.0 program, looks fine on hard drive but when I move it to a disc a 2-minute segment takes up a 650-700mb disc.
Any tips please on how to get an acceptable length of home movie on to a disc?
Please keep the response(s) as simply termed as possible, i.e please be gentle!!!
    Thank you, K

What have you used to convert to your disk?
In simple terms, I'm guessing you didn't encode or convert, which means converting to a smaller format which
    a) wll fit on a CDR and
    b) will play on a standalone DVD player.
You really need to start with the 'how to' guides on the left, you'll probably find one that's shows you how to convert from camcorder footage to VCD (which I imagine you're trying to do).
Welcome to the forum by the way

This is a good one for starters:
Click here and then here maybe.
Have a play around, read the guides and post back with your questions.
    Good luck

I backup my Sony Digital 8 Tapes, create using SP so 1 hour per tape, to DVDs. It takes 3 DVD-Rs, or DVD+Rs, to hold one tape. I generate two sets per tape and store one at work. I capture in AVI from camera to hard drive via firewire in 20-minute segments, which is approximately 4.2 GB or so per segment. It would take approximately 18 CD-Rs per set to hold the same information.

Unless you're willing to compress and lose quality or get a DVD writer another backup strategy you might consider is to record your captured AVI back out to a blank tape from your computer to camera. This is exactly what I use to do until I got my DVD writer. In fact, I'd backup to two tapes and take one to work to keep safe. I have roughly 16 hours of digital video (i.e., 16 tapes) of my son from birth to now (he's almost 3) and wife. This video is irreplacable and that's the reason I make two backup copies and store one away from home.
