The Plextor 8x went from $300USD down to $239USD. How much will the ASUS be?

I haven't got a clue and I'd like to know what the DVD+R: 8X (Z-CLV) means if anyone knows

I wouldn't buy one straight away either as they will be too pricey and will they be reliable enough to burn at that speed?

how much will the media cost also?

In the past I would buy the next latest greatest thing that came out regarding PC's but its just far too costly as within weeks/months the prices drop so much

I'll be sticking with 4X until 8X comes down to the same level 4X is at now, though I may jum ship a litle earlier it it proves to be worth it . I'm always happy with 2nd generation hardware as you get more for your money and I'll let some other rich person buy the 1st generation stuff and to save 8 minutes is it worth paying that much more as soon as it's released?

My external Sony burns at 2x but I am very tempted to get a NEC 4x burner, they are going for $118 USD.

its all a matter of choice really isn't it, some jump onto the next level quicker than others

I got the Pioneer 104 when it 1st came out and paid dearly for it. I then got the 105 as soon as that came out and luckily got a good price for my 104 reselling it. I now weep when I see the 106 prices though as I know my 105 is probably worth more to my local scrap man than reselling it and I should have sold it earlier but decided not too and I've now missed the boat!

p.s. CLV for those who don't know
Constant linear velocity. Refers to a rotating disc system in which the head moves over the disc surface at a constant velocity, requiring that the motor vary the rotation speed as the head travels in and out. The further the head is from the center of the disc, the slower the rotation. The advantage of CLV is that data density remains constant, optimizing use of the surface area. Contrast with CAV and ZCLV.

    MackemX,

I know what you mean. When I purchased my External Sony 500A, with the warranty from BestBuy, I think I spent a little over $500 USD and it seems now you could get 3 or even 4 OEM drives for that amount of money.

That means the 8xDVD-R (CLV) will be a minute faster than the 8xDVD+R (Z-CLV)

  14. If the Asus is based on a Pioneer AO7 when will they both hit the shelves?
If they miss the holiday shopping season then they'll miss a lot of sales-will people want to wait months to save a minute on a 8x DVDR burn?

Plextor 708 users have been burning at 8x for several weeks now on 4x DVD+R media.

  15. Hm, not even a 16x DVD-ROM's drive starts at 8x when reading a pressed DVD (at least not my Lite-On) so I wonder if it's really correct that 8x DVD-R will be CLV? If so expect to see problems with Princo discs that explode in the burner, well if Princo really can make media that will work in 8x on any burner that is

  16. When has one of them ever exploded in a drive?

  18. Well looks like the specs have been changed now. 8x DVD-R is now specified to be Z-CLV (as I guessed) and the CD-R/RW speed has increased somewhat:

  19. I Think that 4x will be enough for a long time, mainly because of the ripping process. What good is to have a recorder that burns in 7 mins when the ripping process takes at least 20-30 minutes? You need 4 computers ripping in order to take full advantage of the recorder's speed.
Even if you spend lots of time doing backups, it won't justify the price, or even the 8x media price. Of course some people that backup data or use it for other purposes will find it interesting.

    just my 2 cents.

    Peace!
