I have an .avi film with ac3 (unknown tag 2000) compression. i am trying to extract the audio using VDub 1.4 but it says that it cannot decompress that audio. I have the ac3 codec but it won't let me extract. I used Gspot and it says that I have the codec, I can play the video in Win. Player and it works fine. But trying to extract in VDub or even trying to encode in TMPGENC it still won't work.
Wjy doesn;t this work, please help me with this, god I hate it.
thanks to all that help.
Windows XP Pro SP1.

Can't do it with Vdub. Try this guide.

Actually you can do it in virtualdub...........but you need the ac3 version.
It's called VirtualDub_148_AC3.exe. I believe I downloaded it from another forums tools so you'll have to do a search for it.
Just extract wav as you would normally, the resultant file is suffixed .wav but is in fact an ac3 so ,depending on what you want to do next..............just rename it -
Why is it that so many try to use an application for what it can't do, or doesn't do well? With VDub, extract the audio using direct stream copy. If the audio is in AC3 format, rename from .wav (as VDub insists on outputting) to .ac3, run ac3fix on the extracted ac3, then use the best ac3 to wav converter (take a look under tools) you can find.

If what Mats says doesn't work for any reason (although it should - as it looks like the 'textbook' method), you could use GoldWave to open the original video file, then Save As.. a wav.
GoldWave does the conversion for you - but you might need to normalise the outputted wav, as they often seem to come out very quiet.
This method is always my 'fallback' option, if all else fails.
cheers,
mcdruid.
