I was woundering weather porn can get you into trouble? By that i mean if you were looking at porn and than get your computer serviced a couple of months later, will the people do anything if they find any porn? [even if you delete the porn before you get your computer serviced it still stays on your computer, that's what i heard] and is it different depending on where you live. Also i was downloading a movie off kazza and when i previewed it through womble mpeg [womble can play .dat files even when downloading hasn't finished]it kept on showning scenes from hannibal which i deleted 3 weeks ago!
Cheers.

Yes its true that the files are somewhere in the computer in fact theres a program that can recover deleted files but i wouldn't worry bout it I don't think they would look.
I forgot what the program was called I saw it on an warez site but i didn't download it if your worried bout it just reformat your harddrive then take it in to get it fixed
Hope this helps -
If it's adult Porn and your an adult and all the actors are over the age of 18, no i don't believe it will get you into trouble.
The only way that you could get into trouble with the above is if you start selling it onto people who are underage.
Now, LET ME THIS CLEAR, if it's that sick Pedofile porn then yes, YOU ARE IN VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY BIG TROUBLE.
ALL PEDOFILE'S SHOULD BE PUT UP AGAINST A WALL AND BE SHOT!!!
-
go to zdnet and search for eraser 5.1
it will make ur files unrecoverable.
-
I found a program called evidence eliminator is that the one? I TOO HATE PEDOFILE'S, I WISH I COULD PUT THEM ALL IN A POT OF AZID!!!
Cheers. -
Well, porn can be addictive like drugs. Drug addictions are destructive as are pornography addictions. Pedophiliac pornography is ultra-destructive, and you can go to jail for it.
If you are using your work machine and downloading porn, you're probably going to get fired. I read a statistic last year that the majority of pornography downloading in America happens between 8:30AM and 5:30PM. What's that tell you?
When I worked at Sony Electronics in San Diego, I was friends with one of the I.T. department guys. He said that we would be amazed at the amount of porn he found on company computers when he would work on them.
According to the Evidence Eliminator program advertisement, all keystroke and internet sites ip addressed accessed are stored in an encrypted file on the harddrive that can be accessed using forensic software, according to law. I'm not sure if that is true, but ee claims to erase even these. They claimed that simple reformatting wouldn't erase some of the data.
Your best bet is to marry someone you want to have sex with, then you hopefully won't need porn. If you are going to look at it, don't do it at work. -
Another approach is "If you have to ask the question then the answer for you is 'yes'."

well, i work for an ISP that shares a building with a comp consultant... and he always comes out and talks about the sick shit he finds on his costumers comps... he said he has seen everything from your everyday porn... to a homeade clip of a guy masterbating on a webcam, so really i guess it has to do with who you sent your comp to to get fixed and whether the porn on it is illegal...
and i dont believe a word of a format not removing your data... formating the drive not only erases the data but also erases the file system... there is no way to recover data that was formatted. -

Absolutely and totally wrong. Ever tried running a thorough disk check in Scandisk? A true format would take a least that long. And even then, magnetic scanning tools that are used by law enforcement agencies can easily recover a substantial portion of the "deleted" data. The DoD have been known to use degaussers that literally warp the disk platters when they truly want to destroy sensitive data (short of incineration with all of the nasty particulate side effects). -
There is a program called BCWipe which has a U.S. DoD (Department of Defense) setting which is the same setting that the US DoD uses to erase sensitive data (seven pass extended character rotation wiping (DoD 5200.28-STD)).
You can even use the "Wipe Free Disk Space" to completely eliminate files that you have already erased using the conventional "delete" function (which still stores it on your computer).
Here is a short description from the site:
The BCWipe software is designed to securely delete files from the disk. Standard file deletion leaves the contents of the "deleted" file on your disk. Unless it has been overwritten by files subsequently saved, it can be recovered using standard disk utilities. Working quickly and integrated with Windows Shell, BCWipe shreds data in files so that they can not be recovered by any means.

They also have a program called BestCrypt which allows you to encrypt a section of your hard drive that you can password protect. Therefore, no one will be able to access the files that you put there. And I mean NO ONE!
You can also use Magic Folders (download.com) which allows you to hide folders on your PC so no one knows they are even there.
And I seriously doubt that anyone servicing your computer is going to go to any extent to see what else is on your computer. They have better things to do with their time.

If you're ashamed of things you're saving to your hard drive, or think you will be potentially ashamed of things you're saving to your hard drive, or feel the things you're saving to your hard drive are illegal, DO NOT SAVE SUCH THINGS TO YOUR HARD DRIVE.
If you want to destroy data you are ashamed of, burn it .. LITERALLY SET FIRE to it until it is completely and totally incinerated beyond belief or otherwise unrecognizability. If you cannot accomplish such a task with data you are or potentially will be ashamed of and/or feel is illegal in any, DO NOT SAVE SUCH THINGS TO YOUR HARD DRIVE in the first place.

Ok, isn't this getting a little bit out of hand here? I mean, c'mon now, if you take your computer in to get serviced and you have porn on it that you don't want the company to see, I highly doubt that after simply deleting what files you've downloaded.. clearing your IE cache and clearing all forms and passwords that the company would take any extremes beyond the simple folder searching for porn. I mean, lets get real here.

I don't see what all the fuss is about, porn is good
I reckon if a computer technician found porn on your PC, he'll make a copy of it for himself.
Knock yourself out man

Looking at pornography won't get you at trouble unless it is at your job or it is child pornography. And the only way to truly clear your drive of everything is to burn it in a fire. The next best thing is a low level format which overwrites the entire drive with 0's and sets it back to factory setting.
Edit: The software PGP(Commericial, don't trust) and GnuPG(Open source, trust worthy) both have a special function to erase files more then a normal delete would do...

hi all, after reading this, i dont see what the original 'trouble' is. is it something have to do w/ legal issues or is this trouble like, the mother finding out that her little boy is being a naughty boy. ? ?.
I'm sure all of us here are mature enuf to handle all these.
I agree FredSnerk, if that service person is a man and sees porn, hey, there's a good chance that he'll look at it himself.
i guess what i'm trying to say is that, '"do" porn at your own risk' -
U R ALL ALITTLE 2 PARANOID LOL
Its only illegaL if its on a company computer and thats against the companies rules (Not really illegal, but u can loose your job)
or if its Child Porn = Under age 18
To do a low level format, all u have to do is type in dos
"format c:/U" without the ". U = UnconditionaL
If u format it this way, there is NO way the data can be recovered as it is REALLY erased in realtime and not just marked for overwrite. (Takes 10-30 minutes) I dont care what company or software/hardware device claims to b able to restore your data after a format of this type, THEY ARE LYING PLAIN AND SIMPLE
Computers -
Chris X: That is not a low level format, that is a standard format. To perform a low level format there is usually dos software on your hard drive manufactures page.
-
Simple solution - save any sensitive files (which would also include financial files, tax returns, etc.) onto an external hard-drive, zip disk, etc.
