I have just been having the hardest time transferring some old vhs movies to dvd. It's a simple idea, I cannot believe how tedious it has been for me. I usually try to figure these things out by myself. I have been using forums and I have not gotten anywhere. If there is anyone out there that has a proven method they have used, please share with me. I dont care what programs I need. Thank you very much in advance.![]()

The proven and least arduous method is to use a standalone DVD recorder. Just a suggestion.

It cannot be done. This website is for tax haven purposes only.
.................buy a standalone recorder - save money & grief - get into heaven free pass if bought on sunday.

Make it simple and just buy a DVD recorder plus you will get a better quality transfer from VHS to DVDR with the recorder. I have seen the recorders as low as $350. You could spend well over that amount for capture hardware and software and still not do as good as the recorders IMO (and I have done it both ways).

I have an ATI All In Wonder Card.
1) capture with ATI's Multimedia Center (which comes with the card). For great quality I capture DVD quality mpg2. To get 7 hours at good quality I use mpg1
2) Use Tmpgenc DVD Author to clip out bad parts and add chapter marks and menus.
3) Burn with Nero
VHS to DVD example:
1) Time to Capture 2 hour tape = 2 hours
2) Time to clip out bad parts and add chapters and menus = zero to 30 minutes depending on how much time you want to spend. In other words you can just automatically set chapters every minute or you can carefully go through the movie and apply the chapter points just where you want.
3) Time for Tmpgenc DVD to create all the files needed = 30 minutes
4) Time for Nero to Burn disk = 30 minutes -

My Card is ATI AIW Radeon 7500. My understanding is there is no big improvement going to higher number cards so if you see one on sale grab it.

My method is convert all analog movie using my Sony PC110 and capture on pc and use Pinnacle Studio to make a DVD with menu. Studio takes a long time to render but good quality though.-B

Womble MPEG2VCR to edit and TMPGEnc DVD Author to author and burn. Never had a audio sync problem since and Womble MPEG2VCR is very fast. I had to buy all three programs but it was definitely worth it.

Thanks for all the info. I'm almost there. How can I burn multiple Vhs movies to a dvd once I have the correct VIDEO_TS files?

if you treat each movie like a seperate authoring project, you'll end up with three separate sets of VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders. You can't just put them on to a disc together - you need to author as a set of three movies, not as three separate movies.
for example, in DVD Lab you would import your movies, go to Movie->Add New, add as many empty movies as you need, drag one video file into each Movie, add chapters, menu links, etc, then compile.
You will have one set of VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders containing all your movies.- housepig
