  1. Gah!

I have a Hauppauge Digital DVB TV decoder, which allows me to make recordings from television much like a DVD recorder. I have a choice of recording formats to use, though for some reason at the moment I am only limited to two formats. One format is sound only, which is about as welcome as a fart in a phone box, and so I have only one real format I can use for recording. This format is described as PVA.

Unfortunately, TMPGEnc does not recognise this format. Nor does VCD Easy. I am told it is an illegal MPEG format when I try to access it using TMPGEnc, though Windows Media player recognises it, and WinXP describes it as an MPG file.

In the Hauppauge help documentation, the format is described as PES-Audio/Video format, or PVA for short. Does anyone know what this is? There is an option (according to the documentation) to use MPEG format, but this is unavailable in the program (probably due to a bug.)

What I would like to do is to make the recordings I have already made compatible with VCD, SVCD, and DVD. As I mentioned earlier, TMPGEnc won't touch the video, though it will recognise the audio source. Has anyone got any ideas?

I am contacting Hauppauge to try to get a working solution to this problem, though I suspect they are going to tell me it is a bug and unsolvable. Can anyone recommend a good digital TV DVB player/recorder? I have tried Showshifter, but currently they do not support digital TV. Anything has to be better than Hauppauges half-arsed software.

Please help if you can. All help welcome!

What you have is most likely a Transport MPEG stream. The other variant is Program MPEG stream. There are differences in the multiplexing between the two and that is why the encoders don't really understand it (they understand Program Streams only) and Media Player does (it is a player and the file is playable).

What you need to do is demultiplex it into the elementary audio and video streams and you will be fine then.

I recall that such a discussion was repeated a few weeks ago. Do a forum search for DVB and demux.

You can also try the MPEG Utilities in Tmpgenc's menu to demux. Perhaps it will demux the PES (Packetized elementary streams) into elementary streams.

I'm sure there has to be a tool around to demux these files.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  3. Unfortunately a forum search for DVB and Demux only brings up this thread.

Does anyone out there remember what the post was on this topic previously? I have tried using the MPEG tools on TMPGEnc but it does not see the video file, so I can do nothing to demux them.

    Can anyone out there help?

    Thanks,
