    Hi there

I am also a 'newbie' so i'm not sure if what i'm telling you is 'by the book' so to speak...but I had much the same problem as you.

I found that if I used virtualdub and done a direct stream of the video only, and used no audio, then put this together with a .wav of the film done in goldwave....it would then stop crashing. I'm not sure that this is true for every film...but i think there maybe something in the audio which causes tmpgenc to crash... maybe one of the experts could expand on this a little.

    Hope it works for you
Don't ask me, I know nothing - but there's a helluva lotta nothing in this world !!!!
