Believe it or not, that was proven long, long ago.

To expand on it even more, that normally only works with serif fonts like Times and not sans-serif fonts like Arial. We were mostly trained to read serif fonts (like newspapers, books, etc) and not san-serif fonts.

This is often taught in basic courses in college that cover publishing layout and design.

Because these forums use san-serif Verdana, your topic title didn't work as well as the article text. Though it did work. AT first, I thought you were trying to be Tweety bird! I taught I taw a putty tat!

Words are read as a whole, not letter at a time. In fact, speed reading deals with reading phrases as a whole.

  3. I've seen this before in high school when we had a university student come in and conduct some tests to try and prove his PhD thesis.

He was using a similar technique but his was designed to help dyslexic people be able to read because they actually understand the jumbled words better than the properly spelt version.

Yeah, it was wild when I read it on slashdot. I didn't even notice that the letters were jumbled until I finished reading the article.

  9. Can you imagine how hard it would be to write a parser to handle this?
Just what is this reality thing anyway?

It took me a minute to read tops. Mainly becaue so much of the letter 'p' is cut off.

Yeah. Like tgpo's example and lordsmurf's comments, it's probably harder or easier depending on the font used.
