  1. Hello!

it seems, for some reason, that my backups will play on every stand alone dvd player (as well as a ps2) but WONT play in either my dvd-r drive or dvd drive.

any idea why this might be?

    just to note:

i have a 16x lite on dvd drive, pioneer 105 dvd-r drive, am burning useing dvd shrink 3 onto ritek g04's using nero 6.

    any help appreciated.

  2. What software are you using to play your DVDs?

If you are using PowerDVD I'd recommend upgrading to the very latest version and seeing if that doesn't help. If using WinDVD, try using PowerDVD.

Odds are highly likely it's related to the software -- can you play the commercial disks using this same software?

  3. i am using power dvd, but i don't think that is the problem. with a burned disc in the drive, even trying to open its contents in explorer fails (i always get "no disc in drive" as a message.)

also, it does play the original discs fine in the drives.

    stranger and stranger...

My computer does that sometimes. It is usually a driver error in the drives. I would put in something like a normal CD and see if the ROM's are capable of recognizing that there is a disc in the drive without crashing explorer.
If you using XP then just restore your computer to a happier time or go to your Device Manager and delete your DVD drives and reinstall them. It's not a disc problem and it is not a software player problem if you can't even open the discs in explorer.
Sometimes just restarting the computer fixes it. You might also want to try turning on the "autoplay" if you have yours disabled. Make sure that you enable autoplay in your tweakUI settings also if you have Tweak.

  5. I'm surprised that the recorder can't play back its own discs - they usually tend to fare better with problematic media than standard ROM drives do.

As far as the DVD-ROM drive goes, it could just be that it doesn't like recordable media. I had to ditch a perfectly good Matsushita DVD-ROM drive a few months back because it was pre +/-R and just ignored them with the "no disc" problem.
