noobie Q. How to play DVD on CD player?
I genuflect to your knowledge and respectfully ask:
I have a cd player on my laptop and PC and would like to play DVDs on them. I've been told that I need the codecs and a software program to do so. What do you experts suggests?
Thanks for the help, in advance.

This CAN NOT be done. You need a DVD-ROM drive to play/read DVD media. CDs and DVDs might look the same but they are totally different technologies and use completely different lasers, formatting, etc.
However, all DVD-ROM drives can also read CDs. -
You beat me to it... which is just as well, since I was completely prepared to give a smart-ass answer.

No can do. Different laser wavelengths.
Buy a DVD ROM drive.ICBM target coordinates:

Or better yet, buy a DVD Burner and join in the fun!
Just what is this reality thing anyway? -

In case your are wondering, NO you cannot turn your CDRW into a DVDRW by downloading a firmware for it. -
Seems to me your best bet is if you have a PC with a DVD-Rom to backup the DVDs to a format readable by a cd-rom. Plenty of guides on this site to tell ya how to do that...

If your programs are mostly shorts/trailers/spots, you could have a DVD "backed up" to a miniDVD (aka cDVD aka DVDonCD), but even this would require somebody to have a DVD-ROM drive to do the original backing-up. Also, you would probably need to recompress so as to have a lower bitrate to be within reasonable CD spin limits, and this will lower your quality somewhat.
Time to take the plunge, huh?
