Lite-On LDW-401S writing DVD-R/-RW with firmware upgrade?

One of the users on the forum, Tompika, has posted that the Lite-On LDW-401S can write both + and - formats following a firmware upgrade!

This sounds like a bit of fantasy to me but I am reserving my judgement until I get a few replies, as I just wonder whether the 401 is based on the +/- writer they are bringing out soon but they didn't have the firmware sorted for the - side of writing so released the 401 as a + only. Who knows.

Anyone got any knowledge of this?

We proved a 401s can be bumped to a 411s and burn -R media. The current firmware rev is not perfect yet but its getting there with about a 75% playback compatibility in 10 different readers here, compared to same media burned in a Pioneer 106. The strange and interesting thing is the 411s itself is in the 25% of those that reject the burned discs. I am keeping Liteon up to date with the tests and they are going to keep me updated with firmware revisions so for interested users I will keep info coming on this.
