  1. All,

This is going to sound really stupid. My girlfriends family live in the us and we are in the uk

We have made some home dvds but they will not work on their dvd player. They work on mine fine but im not sure if its the media i.e. their dvd player isnt compatible with the media or if its the dvds may be pal instead of ntsc. Please can someone tell me how to check what region they are in.

    thnaks

  2. Don’t confuse region code with PAL/NTSC, if the DVDs are home made they don’t have region code, but if they are PAL and you try to play them in an NTSC-Only player, or vice versa, they will not work. Use SmartRipper to check what they are.

  3. Ask them what kind of DVD Player they have and check to see what media is compatible with it with this link:

  4. Thanks for the help guys.

I have opened the dvd in smartripper and it says it is ntsc even though im in the UK. But hey it works on my player (pal) so like you said home made dvds are region free! Yippee.

That just means its the media compatibility - thanks agin all

Like said before, don't confuse regional coding with colorsystems. It is allowed for a disc to be coded for europe (Region 2) with NTSC as color system. Japan uses NTSC and is Region 2 for example.

Also, beware, most PAL players will play NTSC, but not many NTSC players will play PAL discs. My guess is that it's the media or the player that causes the problems...

Use DVDDecrypter(IFO mode,Demux) to rip to HDD andTMPGEnc or any encoder to convert, just select NTSC(29.97fps,525lines,720x480).

  8. will it also convert the sound correctly as well or do I have to go through the whole sound conversion part? If I have to do that, then I think I'll just skip it, because I have never gotten that to work correctly.

  9. do I have to convert the sound also? or does dvddecryptor or tmpgenc take care of that?
