Hey everyone, just got a simple question about Home Theater Systems you can get in a box. I know they arent the best of the best but for a college kid they are probably good enough.
Has anyone heard the Onkyo HT-S760? Its got good reviews and I think it looks decent. Anyone have good results with Onkyo?
I do not know much about Home Audio so if I should stay away from it and keep my money then I will do that.
Thanks for any input.

A buddy of mine actually owns the system you're talking about and its fairly decent. If you have some extra dough and find a good deal, its not a bad buy. But IMO, you're better off by keeping your money in your pocket for now and buy one later(like I'm planning to do). My friend is filthy rich so he doesnt need to save. I have to be satisfied by just turning the volume up

Not to come off sounding like a Dad or anything but I agree with Devanshu; save your cash while in school, and buy a sweet system when you get out with your first job.
Don't add possible distractions to your life while in school. Since you are at this site you are probably into backing but DVDs and I'm sure it is killing you not to be utilizing them to the fullest extent.
Keep the faith. Focus on school. Whatever you buy now will more than likely be a garage sale item in a few years when you start pulling in real coin.
FYI, I'm currently looking into creating my first home system (a home theater). The costs and decisions are overwhelming. -
Onkyo is a pretty decent brand I have found in my experience although that was a different model to the one you are asking about.
I would agree with the others though, unless you are brimming with cash which most University/College students aren't (just look at me) then put off the purchase till you can go top of the line.
Like my Dad, he saved up a months pay when he was young to buy a set of speakers and they still sound awesome 20 years later. -
Well, of the "home theatre in a box" kits i've seen and heard, they suck
Personally, i would spend the same money on a decent DVD player, a 2 channel amp, and two good speakers. If you buy speakers which have accompanying speakers for surround kits you can add the rears and centres when you wish (and you can also mix and match if you want to) and the DVD player is obviously still good. You're really only out on the amp, but as long as it's in good nick the resale value of hifi seperates is high, and actually amps always come in handy. you could use it for your PC for instance.
Here's a good setup:
DVD Player
Amp (Although i don't believe you get cmabridge gear over there, shame!)
Speakers
And comes in for about the same price as your onkyo kit. It'll sound much better, the DVD player will look much better, and you can upgrade piece by piece when you have more money.
Good stereo on a film is far more enjoyable than passable surround.
Disclaimer:
Prices right at time of pressing buttons. this is all my opinion and should be obeyed instantaneously. etc etc blah blah blah. -
Ya I think you two just sold me. I am going to wait and save up for awhile. Then get some good quality stuff. Eventually I will have a home theater built up......heheh. Might take awhile but I will get there. Thank for the advice.
