I am a total newbie when it comes to video editing and using sound. I don't know what all the terms mean, Capturing, Encoding, Ripping, Copying, Etc, Etc, when it comes to DVD software. I only know what I have read that Edition 5 DVD sound editing is not the best. I am looking for a software to compliment Edition 5, that will do it all for a reasonable price. What's best? Is an inexpensive software like Nero compatible? What software can do Capturing, Encoding, Ripping, Copying, Etc, Etc?
When I stated that I did not know what Capturing, Encoding, Ripping, Burning, Copying, Etc, Etc, is I was not kidding. I don't know the difference between Burning and Copying. To me they are the same. I want software so that If I would like to duplicate something, no matter what the term or what the original source is, I want to be able to do it. I would like the ability to cut and paste portions and manipulate what I'm working with at the time. Like I said pretty much I want a software that will cover most of the bases and do it all.
I guess you have to be a novice before you can understand the question asked, and I guess you have to be competent at editing movies/video/audio before you can word the proper question.
I am sure you have read where edition 5 just does not do the job when it comes to DVD/audio and my question is more of a general question, that if Edition 5 does not do the job, what else is needed? If another software is needed, what's the best inexpensive software to complete Edition 5, so of speak? Or do I have to buy individual software's for each individual aspects/task of audio DVD? I really don't know how better to formulate a question on something I don't have an understanding of yet.
I won't have a DVD, Sony 510A till this coming Tuesday when I am supposed to receive my new system. Never having worked with DVD, puts me at a disadvantage. I was hoping to have a suggested software to purchase to complete my system around the same time I received it.
Thanks in advance

Hello Chuck
So what will you be doing mostly? Are you JUST worried about making back-up DVD discs from original DVD discs are do you intend to convert other video sources (such as VHS or cable TV etc.) to DVD?
When you speak of editing do you simply mean cutting out commercials from TV shows and or simple trimming of the start and end times of video clips or are you talking about extensive editing such as that which is normally done with camcorder footage where you need to do a lot of editing of mini-clips to make one coherent whole?
Answers to these questions will help me or anyone else in giving you usefull answers.

There is a GLOSSARY on this site (see bar on the left hand side) that will help to explain what some of the terms are that we use."The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

Like FulciLives says, they are lots of meanings to "editing video". Given that you are just starting out, I think that a simple program that splices parts together and maybe something that will put an overlay or a title on the screen (like scrolling text over the video) would be fine to start out with.
Regardless, you need to narrow your overall goal. That will help determine the best program for you. Maybe give an example of a project you had in mind. I don't really know of a program that will do "everything". But, there are programs that will, for example, backup a DVD from start to finish, or do all the steps of making a DVD from a digital video camera."A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct."

After posting my question I began reading some posts only to find I should have been reading all the questions and answers before Posting. I did see the bar on the left hand side but like most people I just had to post my question first. Sorry All. I have done so much research lately and reading trying to put my new system together and picking out Video Editing Software, that I tried to take a short cut and see if someone out there knew the answer for a fast answer.
I wanted to be able to purchase the software before my system got here on Tuesday. I apologize to you and the group.
My plans are to use the DVD software to copy Video's and movies I plan on making. Making copies of my music CD's so I can put the originals away. I plan on using music in my Video' and would like to add music to them. I believe that I really just need to forget a simple resolution to a complex subject. I need to continue learning how to edit video and start researching DVD answers before I can ask the proper question. Or something like that. I read in a post that there is never the best of anything, it's what works for you. So I need to find out what's going to work for me. Maybe what I should have asked is what software should I stay away from?
thanks

@r49miner,
For capturing, editing and burning video I recommend Ulead VideoStudio or Pinnacle Studio, both are easy enough for a beginner but they have enough features to please an experienced user. Both can rip CD's as well to WAV.
If you want a great CD ripper(and free) use CDex -
Chuck ...
Look into a program called VEGAS VIDEO by SonicFoundry. It is a great program if you will be making your own movies be it amatuer movies or documentaries or whatever.
It is a tad expensive BUT it will let you do just about ANYTHING that can be done with video.
The champ for a long time has been an a program called PREMIERE (by Adobe) which is also very expensive (more or less the same as VEGAS VIDEO) but it seems that VEGAS VIDEO has all the same functions if not more with a simplier easier-to-use interface.
Mind you though that this is OVERKILL unless you are making your own movies from camcorder footage etc. For simple video capture where all you need to do is trim some stuff out (like TV commericials) you can get away with using mostly FREEWARE or fairly inexpensive software. The same goes for DVD to DVD-R backups.

Do you want to be able to add special effects to the movie (like inserting light sabers, have people fly, etc)? Or is this just simple things (like making a clip show of several home videos, cutting out commercials)? Or somewhere in between (like adding fade outs between scenes, inserting boarders around the video)?
If you want to make the special effects, I would learn how to use some of the high end programs like Vegas Video and Adobe Premiere.
If you are looking for simple cut and paste without changing the video, stick with learning the freeware.
For things in between, it is nice to have a visual "drag-n-drop" interface that many of the free programs don't have. Go with a low cost package like Pinnacle Studio."A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct."

WowI should have come to this forum and forgot about the rest of them. You actually have people that do contribute, even to someone that was trying to take a short cut. I take my hat off to you all and bow.
I will try not to tell my sad story about Editing software or cards. Let's just say that I own Studio 7, Studio 8 and Edition 5. Like I said at the beginning I should have come here first. Studio 8 and Edition should arrive about the same time my new system arrives (my new system is the one I have listed).
I plan on digitizing and editing Analog home Movies, Digital home movies of my kids, grand kids. Instead of getting stuck sitting for hours being bored with things that don't have any meaning or value for other people, I want to be able to string clips together, not just the home movies but from a regular movie or a scene from a TV program, to make the home movies interesting to watch, more of a production with music and special effects. At least that's my intent. I will also be one of the camera's filming the annuale Fishing Derby for the Make A Wish foundation. I'll be helping to put a little movie together for their annual dinner.
Reading different forums, I ran accross some posts that stated that Edition 5 did not have the best DVD/Audio program. I was looking for a software to compliment it.
I can't believe I got through that without Whinning.
Thanks again
