  1. I want to buy a burner that has a minimum requirement of PIII 600mhz...but I have a PII 450mhz. Does this mean the burner won't work in my PC at all...or will it work, but slower? I know its probably a stupid question, but I'd figure I'd ask before going out and buying a burner that might not work.

    Thanks!

Don't worry, it will work. Provided your PC supports Ultra DMA 33 or higher (66 or 100). PII systems I would expect would support UDMA 33 but UDMA 66 is questionable.

For the DVD to record at 2x speed you need the PC to be able to sustain a disk throughput of 3Mbytes per sec. for 4x recording you need a sustainable transfer rate of 6Mbytes per second. (the numbers are approximate).

A PII/450 will certainly achieve this.

For comparison, Nero, recording at 4x on a P4/2.67 consumes 3% of the CPU.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

The minimum requirements often are due to the software that is bundled with the hardware. Not because of the hardware itself. In this case, I would say that it is from the bundled software.

A PII 266 with 192mb RAM, running Windows 2K, will burn at 2x no problems. HD was DMA33, and DVD-R was PIO Mode 4.

This is from both an Image, and VIDEO_TS AUDIO_TS.

Primo DVD, DVD Decrypter, and Maestro Pre Master Tools all worked fine.
