Does anybody know if they will ever start producing dual-layer dvd burners? If not, what is the limitation/reason for this? Thanks.

  2. No, because it's physically impossible for the laser to write to two different layers. That's what I have read anyway....

Right, its not possible with conventional burning technology. How is the laser going to go through the first layer to burn the second one? When dual layer DVDs are made they are pressed together.

Anyway, even if they could find a way, by the time it came out there would be newer high capacity media anyway, and by that I mean entirely new media standards not just a larger dvd-r.

I don't think that is quite correct. The laser that is in your machine now has a focal length of X, and the burnable layer is semitransparent. Superthin, in other words. It would not be that difficult to make a burner that raised the laser, say, 2 thousandths of an inch to focus on a layer beyond the primary layer, or to refocus it that same length.

I don't think we WILL see it. Why should we, when capacities, via a new tech, such as Blu-Ray will allow shorter pits and lands, thus closer spacing, thus more data, as well as finer tracking, so that the spiral is proportionately longer, allowing that much more data per disk.

Good grief, when we do get Blu-Ray,as warm aas a disk is in a fast CD burner, there will probably be a timed interlock to prevent you from removing the disk till it has cooled enough to not bend like a piece of paper. Continue to spin, no laser, till ambient temp reaches X degrees.

I don't know how the hell hot a DVD gets when you burn it.

    Cheers,

    George
