  1. When I author using DVD Workshop, the audio seems to blank out every few seconds. Any ideas what's going on and how to fix it?? I've tried encoding at differen audio rates and the problem occurs all the time.

    Thanks for any help!!

It varies depending on what I'm looking at. But it skips regarlesss of the format.is.

  4. Does this only occur on the final DVD? Or can you isolate some other place in the process where it occurs?

    Hi,

I had problems with sound when I first tried using AC3 (instead of MP2) with Workshop. I'd encoded both the audio and video beforehand and muxed them together with TMPGEnc. I didn't let Workshop reencode them.

Problems varied between choppy sound, to freezing and/or choppy video. After days of mucking around re-encoding the AC3 file and the video file, I was having no success. I learnt quite a bit about AC3 in the process, but it turned out that that wasn't my problem...

I'd heard that burning using different software could make a difference, so I thought I'd give it a try. When I tried burning with Nero instead of Workshop, it worked first time.

Specifically, I allowed Workshop to author the DVD to generate the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directories. But then I switched to Nero and burnt the DVD using the UDF 1.02 file system which is the DVD-Video standard. Workshop burns with the ISO/UDF bridge file system, and obviously my standalone didn't like it. (For further explanation of what these are, look in the Glossary).

I don't know why my standalone would play DVDs with MP2 audio burned with ISO/UDF bridge, but not play AC3 burnt the same way.

Now, this might not be your problem. But this is something that worked for me.

I hope this is of some small help.

    Ian.

To eliminate skipping, one must carefully determine the precise attributes of one's SOURCE media.

Plus, one should never mix media with varying attributes in the same project.

I always prepare my input media *prior* to import.

Once the precise attributes of source media are determined, one should carefully match the project settings of the application to match.

For example, the high quality MPEG-2 clips recorded by my DVD camcorder exhibit the following properties:

    NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
    MPEG files
    24 Bits, 704 x 480, 29.97 fps
    Field Order B
    (DVD-NTSC), 4 : 3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8800 kbps)
    Audio data rate: 256 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo

Knowing these properties, I can then adjust Ulead DVD Workshop's project settings to match.

    As a result, there's no re-encoding - and - there's no audio skipping.
