I'm interested in buying a full DVD authoring system that can handle Single and Dual Layer DVD's. I would need to have a DTS encoder also. The one thing that is really puzzling me is the subtitle part. Do i need any hardware to input subtitles or a software can do it. I would be getting direct text translation in .txt format and i need to input them into the DVD's i'm wanting to author.

Sadly i'm still a newbie and i need all the help i can get. Need to know the total setup cost and also places where i can go for training to do this.

If anyone can hook me up with some websites on the hardware and anyone in here is dealing with these hardware, replies will be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

i have many such systems -- plan on spending about $40,000 - $45,000 on hardware and software incl. encoders and dts encoder and such.

or get a mac with dvdpro 2 , plan on spending $5000 by the time your done .. plus another $7000 for dts encoding (not on a mac) and mpeg2 encoding ..

add to this a DLT 7000 or 8000 tape machine and an authoring dvd burner and a dvd-r duplicator .. new --this will run you about another $8000 for basic set up (multidisk duplicators can run up mega $$ - but just a 1 or 2 disk burner/duplicator is often enough for awhile)

if you are really serious - you should get a color calibrator and broadcast monitor as well as a dvd and mpeg analyzer .. another $10,000 on the cheap side and up to $25,000 ...

then you should have a dvd printer - thermal and/or inkjet ..

photoshop and dvdmenu pro is a nessessity ..

then you will need tape machines ...

normally you will have to have as a min. :
    vhs/svhs w/ TBC
    beta sp
    DV
    hi8 and 8mm

all of the above should have machine control (422 and/or firewire control) (ideally anyway -- at least for the dv and sp and svhs deck)

and a good hardware capture board isa good thing , top of the line encoders are sdi .. so you need sdi I/O ...

software lic additional of course ...

when your done - $100,000 is not uncommon when your all set up .... plus another $5000 a year for maintainance ...

    training -- http://www.videosymphony.com/bootcamps_dvd.html
$14,500 .. pretty good deal, 600 hours or something like that ..

    2 day course here http://www.dvdlearn.com/pages/scenarist_info.htm

looking at the above -- i realize i may of given you sticker shock on the costs (but they are more than reasonable) ...

if this is more than what you expected -- there are other options ...

i would need to know more on what your planning on doing though ..

Could we speak through email as then i would be able to tell you what i actually need and maybe you might give me some advice on the hardware and what i need. I currently have DVD-RW and also a low grade DVC2 (compared to the things we're talking about).
