  1. Slashdot.org reecently reported on www.cdfreaks.com who carried a Dutch test on CD-R disks showing deterioration after 2 years. Anyone know of any similar studies on blank DVD media?

Probably aren't any DVD media that have been sitting around for that long, yet. However, given that the manufacturers are all pretty much the same guys for both CD and DVD, I wouldn't expect DVD to perform any better.

Actually, the data in DVD has more longevity than CD-R. The data layer on DVDs are sandwhiched betweet 2 layers of plastic and CD-R is NOT. This gives DVD better protection from H20, scratches, and even humidity.

CD-R media data longevity is Really not as good as 1st claimed. I have had many of my Memorex CD_Rs go bad, and it only took 4 years. The top data layer starts to peel away from the plastic disc. A real bummer as I had over 400 of them.

  4. The error correction mechanism on the DVD formats is more robust than that incorporated with CD's, too - and a good thing, considering how tightly that data is packed in there !
